{"id":167618,"date":"2016-09-14T12:46:16","date_gmt":"2016-09-14T07:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=167618"},"modified":"2016-09-14T12:46:16","modified_gmt":"2016-09-14T07:16:16","slug":"vat-is-increased-to-payback-rajapaksas-rs-1-3-trillion-loan-rajitha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/vat-is-increased-to-payback-rajapaksas-rs-1-3-trillion-loan-rajitha\/","title":{"rendered":"VAT Is Increased To Payback Rajapaksa&#8217;s Rs. 1.3 Trillion Loan: Rajitha"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To find the necessary finances to payback former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Mahinda+Rajapaksa&amp;x=10&amp;y=7\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mahinda Rajapaksa<\/span><\/a>\u2019s Rs. 1.3 trillion loan, the Yahapalanaya government says it is compelled to slap the public with an additional four percent Value Added Tax (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=VAT&amp;x=5&amp;y=6\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">VAT<\/span><\/a>).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67446\" style=\"width: 262px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Rajitha-Senaratne.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67446\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67446\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Rajitha-Senaratne.jpg\" alt=\"Rajitha\" width=\"252\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-67446\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rajitha<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cabinet spokesman and Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Rajitha+Senaratne&amp;x=13&amp;y=4\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Rajitha Senaratne<\/span><\/a> said that that the 15 percent VAT which will come into effect soon will however be imposed only for a period of nine months, after which the government will take steps to simplify the tax.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is temporary,\u201d he claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Senaratne also said that both the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank have come forward to lend the government US$ 6 billion to payback Rajapaksa\u2019s loan.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed that the previous government had obtained loans through various state banks and now this government had to figure ways to pay off these loans and hence they are compelled to burden the public by increasing taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the 15 percent VAT will also be imposed on private health services other than diagnostic tests, dialysis and OPD services. The amended VAT bill was approved by the Cabinet yesterday.
