{"id":167886,"date":"2016-09-19T14:22:48","date_gmt":"2016-09-19T08:52:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=167886"},"modified":"2016-09-20T10:52:24","modified_gmt":"2016-09-20T05:22:24","slug":"abducting-a-student-by-dig-vass-gunawardana-and-family-trial-fixed-for-february","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/abducting-a-student-by-dig-vass-gunawardana-and-family-trial-fixed-for-february\/","title":{"rendered":"Abducting A Student By DIG Vass Gunawardana And Family: Trial Fixed For February"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/now-attorney-general-to-prosecute-dig-vass-for-abducting-and-assaulting-nipuna\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">DIG Vaas Gunawardana and his son Ravindu<\/span><\/a>, who were sentenced to death in November last year for the murder of businessman Mohammed Shiyam, will face yet another trail next year over the abduction of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Nipuna+Ramanayake&amp;x=8&amp;y=4\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Nipuna Ramanayake<\/span><\/a>, a student of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information and Technology.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_91502\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Vass-Gunawardena.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91502\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-91502\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Vass-Gunawardena-140x150.jpg\" alt=\"ex-DIG Vass Gunawardena\" width=\"140\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-91502\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ex-DIG Vass Gunawardena<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The case has been set for trial for February 2017. In the case, apart from Gunawardana and his son, his wife, Shyamali Priyadarshani Perera is also accused of having a hand in the abduction. She, along with five other suspects were released today on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and two sureties worth Rs. 500,000 each by the High Court Judge Padmini Ranawaka.<\/p>\n<p>In July, the Attorney General filed indictments against Gunawardana and seven others in the incident over the abduction and assault of Nipuna Ramanayake. Five police officers of the Colombo Crimes Division were among those indicted apart from Gunawardana, his son and wife.
