{"id":167985,"date":"2016-09-22T14:14:58","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T08:44:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=167985"},"modified":"2016-09-22T14:14:58","modified_gmt":"2016-09-22T08:44:58","slug":"in-new-york-maithri-gets-bouquet-after-bouquet-from-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/in-new-york-maithri-gets-bouquet-after-bouquet-from-us\/","title":{"rendered":"In New York, Maithri Gets Bouquet After Bouquet From US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Maithripala Sirisena appeared to be one of US\u2019s most favourite Presidents in the Asian Region with him receiving a pat on the back from top US officials including US Secretary of State John Kerry and even President Barack Obama during the week.<\/p>\n<p>At a meeting between Sirisena and Kerry on Wednesday during the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Kerry expressed his &#8216;admiration&#8217; to Sirisena on how the new Sri Lanka government has re-directed the country. During the meeting, Kerry also extended &#8216;every possible&#8217; assistance to Sirisena. Kerry had also congratulated Sirisena on the achievements of the unity government during past 15 months.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Maithri-and-Obama.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-167986\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Maithri-and-Obama.jpg\" alt=\"maithri-and-obama\" width=\"639\" height=\"866\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Maithri-and-Obama.jpg 639w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Maithri-and-Obama-221x300.jpg 221w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 100vw, 639px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, the Sri Lanka President told Kerry that despite the achievements, his government was facing a lot of challenges from both the South and the North. \u201cFor example, some of the small minority of the people in the North refused to go back to their lands due to pressure from the extremist groups\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimilarly, some Southern groups are engaged in decrying the reconciliation process. But the unity government is determined to implement the intended programmes despite the oppositions\u201d, Sirisena assured.<\/p>\n<p>Early this week, during a banquet hosted by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for world leaders, Obama who had met Sirisena at the event had also extended his assistance to complement Sri Lanka&#8217;s forward journey.
