The Court of Appeal has issued notice on Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake<\/span><\/a> to appear before court on October 12 with regard to a writ petition filed by several Buddhist monks who challenged Karunanayake’s decision to exempt duty for a beer brewery company.<\/p>\n

According to the petition filed by six Buddhist monks, Karunanayake had exempted the import duty amounting to Rs. 6 billion for alcoholic products imported by the brewery company, Lion Brewery Ceylon PLC.<\/p>\n

When the case was taken up yesterday, the two bench judge, comprising of Vijith Malalgoda and Preethi Surasena ordered a total of 13 respondents including Karunanayake to appear before court next month.<\/p>\n

The petitioners including Ven. Agulugalle Siri Jinananda of Sri Wimalaramaya in Malabe had claimed that due to the decision by the Finance Minister, the government had lost Rs. 371 per litre of beer.
