It is a record breaking best seller among the Sinhala reading public. The Title is qualified with a sub title \u2018Defeat of the Tiger Organisation- the true story\u2019.<\/p>\n

It is more than the memoirs of a soldier. It is a powerful political instrument that is designed to capture the Sinhala Buddhist imagination as an epic narrative of heroism that succeeded in eliminating an existential threat to the Sinhala Buddhist race.<\/p>\n

The soldier had his hands cuffed behind the back by sucessive presidents – J.R Jayewrdene, R Premadasa, Chandrika Kumaratunga as well as by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremresinghe. The humilation and mental anguish suffered by the gallant soldier was extremely pathetic .<\/p>\n

The current President’s decidedly definite codemnation of the manner in which former Defence Secretary (Gotabaya Rajapaksa) and three former Commanders of the Navy were made to appear in court suggests that he has read the book. The inviolability of the Sinhala soldier\u2019s honour is nonnegotiable. In the Sinhala psyche, the Mahavamsa takes precedence over Dhammapada.<\/p>\n

He joins the army in 1981, when it was a small army, with no battle experience, largely used on ceremonial events. It was a career choice on leaving school \u2013 a rational choice of a youth attracted by the allure of a uniformed service. It was a pragmatic choice of a career path. Then he keeps a tryst with destiny.<\/p>\n

In \u2018Rana Maga Ossey Nandikadal Major General Kamal Goonerathne discovers a purpose and an ideal. The purpose is political. The ideal is the rescue of Sinhalese Buddhists of Sri Lanka who faced an existential crisis.<\/p>\n

Prabhakaran was the most evil in Sri Lankan history. His evil designs and prolific terrorist violence was way beyond the pale of civilized society. He was finally cornered and killed at Nandicadal.<\/p>\n

The narrative is Major General Kamal Gunerathne\u2019s reading of events that finally eliminated the most evil man in Sri Lankan history. It is an epic that surfaces the self-righteous savagery of a people in search of a \u2018Sinhala Nirvana\u2019. Fathomless depths of self-righteous Sinhala indignation is summoned in the 845 pages.<\/p>\n

The date- 19th May 2009. Time aprox.10.30 in the morning. The doughty officers and troops of the 53rd division I commanded brought and dumped the bleeding body of the cruel human – an unrelenting curse on the nation, who pushed our motherland in to a dark abyss for three decades at my feet.<\/p>\n

Sir, this is Prabhakaran.<\/p>\n

This is the Prtabhakaran who devoured our land.<\/p>\n

This is the villain who killed thousands of innocent people of our land.<\/p>\n

We killed him sir. \u201cThe wild cheering of my brave soldiers continue to echo in my breast even to this day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The anguish and the pain of a soldier and his family is uniquely private. Unlike in the case of the drafted combatant, it is purposely self-inflicted in the case of the professional soldier. If he chooses to make such anguish suffered five years ago, resolutely public, can the purpose be altruistic? To those patriots who celebrate war, my question would be totally unpatriotic. To those who find war abhorrent, to those who find war to be heroic butchery the question is legitimate and logical. Many in my land belong to the earlier category. I belong to the other.<\/p>\n

Many find Mahinda Rajapaksa the ideal leader of the Sinhala tribe. He manifests the malevolent ethnocentrism of that segment of the Sinhala community. Kamal Gooneratne personifies the urbane malignancy of that ethnocentric ethos.<\/p>\n

Human nature, according to Kant, is neither good nor bad. Its chemistry has both good and bad tendencies. To expect desirable social outcomes purely from our natural beneficence would be total folly. Kant rightly asserts \u201ceverything is finally woven together from folly and childish vanity and often even childish malice and destructiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soldiers who write war memoirs do not write falsehoods. But they don\u2019t tell you the whole truth. They omit the inconvenient. War is too ugly and too brutal for the average human mind. But a particularly savage disposition is a familiar exception. The most interesting details can be generally swept under the omniscient claim \u2018it never happened\u2019 or \u2018it is blatantly concocted propaganda.\u2019<\/p>\n

When political point scoring is the purpose, the most convenient method to lengthen the tome is to explain why it took so long to finish the war. Implicit in that strategy are the assumptions a. the war was fought with the most evil man known in all human history b. the entire victory is telescoped in to the final four years from 2005 to 2009. It explains how the war was finished by the leadership that alone can claim its triumphant conclusion. It is politics by other means- manufacturing heroes for post war continuation of a cold peace.<\/p>\n

The Gallant Soldier ventures in to politics. He explains how Ranil Wickremesinghe lost the Northern Province in the 2005 presidential election.<\/p>\n

He explains that the then Leader of the opposition held great hopes of comming to power with votes from the North and East.His party expected the LTTE to advise people to vote for them. Yet the plans turned topsy turvey after a UNP leader claimed that it was the peace agreement that caused the split in the ranks of the LTTE.<\/p>\n

At some unguarded point he retracts his hardline contempt for perace efforts. He blames the intransigence of Prbhakran for the faliure of peace negotiations.<\/p>\n
