A total of 112 voted in favour of the Bill, while 46 voted against it and 65 MPs abstained from voting.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_146163\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Ravi-Karunanayake.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146163\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-146163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Ravi-Karunanayake-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Ravi Karunanayake\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Ravi-Karunanayake-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Ravi-Karunanayake-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-146163\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ravi Karunanayake<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Accordingly, the public will now be compelled to pay a further 4% tax, from the existing 11% VAT.<\/p>\n<p>The 15% tax increase will be charged on all private health services other than diagnostic tests, dialysis and OPD services. The tax will also be slapped on all telecommunication services, tobacco products, powdered milk which contains added sugar or other sweeteners as well as on air tickets.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, the Supreme Court announced that the amended VAT bill which was presented early this month was in accordance to the Constitution.
