{"id":169895,"date":"2016-11-02T14:28:43","date_gmt":"2016-11-02T08:58:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=169895"},"modified":"2016-11-02T14:28:43","modified_gmt":"2016-11-02T08:58:43","slug":"tiran-alles-remanded-over-rada-fraud-emil-kanthan-evades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/tiran-alles-remanded-over-rada-fraud-emil-kanthan-evades\/","title":{"rendered":"Tiran Alles Remanded Over RADA Fraud, Emil Kanthan Evades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Colombo High Court today remanded former Parliamentarian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Tiran+Alles&amp;x=9&amp;y=3\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Tiran Alles<\/span><\/a> till November 10 for allegedly misappropriating public funds worth Rs. 125 million.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5685\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/tiran-colombotelegraph.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5685\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5685\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/tiran-colombotelegraph-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Tiran\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/tiran-colombotelegraph-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/tiran-colombotelegraph-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5685\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tiran<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Alles, and two others including Saliya Wickremasuriya and Jayantha Samarasinghe were remanded for allegedly committing financial fraud at the Reconstruction and Development Agency (RADA) in 2006, where Alles was Chairman. The fourth accused, ex-LTTEer Emil Kanthan however is evading courts and had not been present at courts during today&#8217;s hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Wickremasuriya was the Chief Operating Officer of RADA, while Samarasinghe was an accountant at the organisation. RADA under the Chairmanship of Alles is alleged to have obtained Rs. 645 million from the Treasury to build houses for tsunami victims. However no houses were constructed.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, the Police confirmed that the funds collected by the organization were credited to Oomps textiles Ltd. \u2013 a fake company formed by three individuals identified as Shanthi Kumar, Gajan Kumar and their mother Anandi Shanthi Kumar. The Court was informed that through this company and two other bogus companies, a total of Rs. 125 million has been misappropriated.
