{"id":172838,"date":"2017-01-20T15:34:40","date_gmt":"2017-01-20T10:04:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=172838"},"modified":"2017-01-20T15:34:40","modified_gmt":"2017-01-20T10:04:40","slug":"appeal-court-dismisses-appeal-by-ravirajs-wife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/appeal-court-dismisses-appeal-by-ravirajs-wife\/","title":{"rendered":"Appeal Court Dismisses Appeal By Raviraj&#8217;s Wife"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Court of Appeal today dismissed an appeal against the recent verdict delivered by the Colombo High Court in the assassination case of TNA MP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Nadaraja+Raviraj&amp;x=10&amp;y=5\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Nadaraja Raviraj<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_152989\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/raviraj.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-152989\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-152989\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/raviraj-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Raviraj\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/raviraj-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/raviraj-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-152989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Raviraj<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The appeal was filed by the victim\u2019s wife Shashikala Raviraj after the Colombo High Court in December acquitted all five suspects involved in the murder case. Citing reasons for dismissing the appeal, the court said today that it was dismissing the appeal because the plaintiffs were not present in court.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the Attorney General also made an appeal to the Appeal Court against the judgement by the Colombo High Court, and sought a retrial into the murder case of the Parliamentarian, who was shot dead in November 2006 in Colombo.<\/p>\n<p>In December last year, the Colombo High Court acquitted all five suspects including three former intelligence officers of the Sri Lanka Navy. The decision was received with vehement opposition with even Ministers in the government condemning the court decision and also questioning the independence of the country\u2019s judiciary.
