{"id":173065,"date":"2017-01-25T15:25:50","date_gmt":"2017-01-25T09:55:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=173065"},"modified":"2017-01-25T15:30:10","modified_gmt":"2017-01-25T10:00:10","slug":"sri-lanka-more-corrupt-under-yahapalanaya-than-under-rajapaksa-regime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/sri-lanka-more-corrupt-under-yahapalanaya-than-under-rajapaksa-regime\/","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka More Corrupt Under Yahap\u0101lanaya Than Under Rajapaksa Regime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sri Lanka has become more corrupt under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Yahapalanaya&amp;x=11&amp;y=5\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Yahapalanaya<\/span><\/a> than it was under the Rajapaksa regime according to this years&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Corruption+Perceptions+Index&amp;x=10&amp;y=6\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Corruption Perceptions Index<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Maithri-Mahinda-August-2-2015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-150051\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Maithri-Mahinda-August-2-2015.jpg\" alt=\"Maithri Mahinda August 2, 2015\" width=\"213\" height=\"138\" \/><\/a>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transparency.org\/news\/feature\/corruption_perceptions_index_2016\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the 2016<\/span><\/a> annual Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), which ranks countries according to the perceived level of public sector corruption, Sri Lanka has ranked 95th among 176 countries,\u00a0dropping down the rank by 10 slots when compared <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transparency.org\/cpi2014\/results\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">to 2014<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the 2015 annual CPI, Sri Lanka has ranked 83rd among 168 countries. This is a marginal improvement on its 85th placed ranking in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>There was a gradual deterioration of the country\u2019s position of corruption perception from 2005 in which year it had been ranked at 78 out of 159 countries. Out of 177 countries that have been surveyed, Sri Lanka is ranked at 91 in 2013, a slippage from 79 out of 176 countries in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Globally, the data reveals that a staggering 69% of the 176 countries scored below 50 in the 2016 CPI indicating the high levels of perceived public sector corruption prevalent throughout the world. 2016 also marks an alarming trend where more countries declined rather than improved in the overall index.&#8221; the Transparency International Sri Lanka said today.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark and New Zealand are jointly ranked 1st in the 2016 CPI with a score of 90 followed by Finland, Sweden and Switzerland ranked 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively. India has scored highest in the South Asian region with a score of 40 and ranked 79th overall. India is followed by Sri Lanka and the Maldives which are jointly ranked 95th.<\/p>\n<p>The Corruption Perceptions Index aggregates data from a number of different sources that provide perceptions of business people and country experts of the level of corruption in the public sector.
