{"id":176437,"date":"2017-04-20T10:20:04","date_gmt":"2017-04-20T04:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=176437"},"modified":"2017-04-24T16:26:37","modified_gmt":"2017-04-24T10:56:37","slug":"rs-3-million-compensation-for-meethotamulla-victims-rs-600-million-for-environmental-ministers-luxury-benz-cars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/rs-3-million-compensation-for-meethotamulla-victims-rs-600-million-for-environmental-ministers-luxury-benz-cars\/","title":{"rendered":"Rs 3 Million Compensation For 30 Meethotamulla Victims; Rs 600 Million For Environmental Minister&#8217;s Luxury Benz Cars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While the official <a href=\"http:\/\/www.disastermin.gov.lk\/web\/index.php?lang=en\">website<\/a> of the Ministry of Disaster Management has no information whatsoever regarding the recent tragedy at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Meethotamulla&amp;x=7&amp;y=7\">Meethotamulla<\/a> where slippage of a massive garbage dump wreaked havoc on residents of the area, the Government has offered compensation of 100,000 rupees to the families of the victims.<\/p>\n<p>As of today 30 bodies have been recovered and an equal number feared dead.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Maithripala+Sirisena&amp;x=12&amp;y=7\">Maithripala Sirisena<\/a> who is also the Environmental Minister has imported two luxury Benz cars. The value of these vehicles are over \u00a0574 million rupees.<\/p>\n<p>After a public outcry over<em>\u00a0<\/em>the senseless spending on vehicles imported by MPs, Ministers and the President, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake declared that the TOTAL VALUE of the two vehicles imported for the President is 148 million rupees.<\/p>\n<p>With irrefutable evidence made available to the Colombo Telegraph by our Customs sources, now we can declare that the tax exempted on these vehicle along is over 426 million rupees (cage 51 of the Customs Bill of Entry), which would have been charged if not for the tax waiver granted under the Customs Ordinance (under Section 19A of the Customs Ordinance).<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the actual market value of these vehicles is well over 574 million rupees and not 148 million rupees as suggested by Finance Minister.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/2-Cars-for-President-Sirisena-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-176441\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/2-Cars-for-President-Sirisena-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"639\" height=\"875\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/2-Cars-for-President-Sirisena-.jpg 639w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/2-Cars-for-President-Sirisena--219x300.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 100vw, 639px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":155516,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2186,1,2375],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-176437","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-featured-news","category-news","category-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Rs 3 Million Compensation For 30 Meethotamulla Victims;
