I was not more than 12 when one day I was going past the Philip Neris Church with\u00a0<\/span>my father\u00a0<\/span>at the wheel. Suddenly he exclaimed,”look child there goes Lord Soulbury<\/a>‘s son.” Obviously I was looking out for sartorial elegance in that motley crowd. My father pretty well knew\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>the lounge suit clad personality that I was looking for and\u00a0 <\/span>observing my failure to spot the man said,”look that’s him in white vetti.”<\/span><\/p>\n

With his thick\u00a0<\/span>bronze curly\u00a0<\/span>hair knotted at the back and a brown file tucked under his armpit, he walked at lightning speed, an unusually lanky, stately figure till he moved out of my sight only to get lost in that\u00a0<\/span>sea\u00a0<\/span>of humanity. Much water has flowed under the bridge since that day but his image remains\u00a0<\/span>ever green, so very\u00a0<\/span>vivid to this day with time not taking its toll on that impressive and indelible impression.<\/span><\/p>\n

His wife was cooking and Manuela his three legged dog was seated on a rickety old chair. His old Volkswagen beetle was parked outside – the one he opted for instead of his official bullet proof limousine. Addressing the UN on global poverty Mujicais asked the delegates who a poor man was. None dared answer and he said,” well, a poor man is he who is always wanting more. “Certainly Muzica drove home a strong point to the international pecking order gathered there on that day. While global economic and political power fosters the need for greater power, a steady rise in inequity results in international terrorism. Mujicais has underscored the need for these elite groups within nations and outside\u00a0<\/span>to lead austere, simple\u00a0 <\/span>lives if they are to move in the direction of world peace.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talking of bourgeoisie simplicity, it brings to writer mind the late VP Menon one of India’s most celebrated diplomats that used London transport instead of his ‘official chariot.’ He refused the plush surroundings of a palatial home in Kensington gardens and chose a one roomed abode, drawing only a token monthly\u00a0<\/span>salary. Menon fasted for days and lived the life of a complete\u00a0<\/span>vegetarian whereas others of his tribe are hell bent on frivolous social gatherings gormandizing the sumptuous food their palettes are strangers to, perhaps\u00a0<\/span>never\u00a0<\/span>even set eyes on before.<\/span><\/p>\n

Giving equal weightage to national policy and individual importance was Ambassador Kalil – one time India’s representative in Rome during whose tenure an Indian woman was widowed. She approached a junior officer requesting redress. He said it did not come within the preview of the Indian embassy. Ambassador Kalil hearing this summoned the guy and the telling off he gave brought out the best in Kaleel. “Look, this lady has been widowed. She is one of our nationals. It is the Indian embassy’s duty to\u00a0<\/span>look after her interests. However trivial it may be, it must be given\u00a0 <\/span>the\u00a0 <\/span>same respect\u00a0<\/span>and treatment we give for\u00a0<\/span>any national policy. I disapprove of your conduct,” he said\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>firm\u00a0<\/span>intonation\u00a0<\/span>the occasion demanded.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kalil’s\u00a0 <\/span>grandeur and exalted spirit, his ability to nullify elite trappings\u00a0<\/span>and release himself from the petty potty fetters of elitism is a role model for those that are found wanting in\u00a0<\/span>the culture of humility. Certainly if such elegant and eminent diplomatic skills were at Sri Lanka’s disposal, Rizana Nafeek<\/a> would be still amongst us.\u00a0<\/span>Magnanimity and graciousness are hall marks of a luminous diplomat which\u00a0<\/span>Sri Lanka has failed to show case as in the case of Rizana Nafeek where\u00a0<\/span>diplomatic bungling\u00a0<\/span>instead of effective diplomatic handling was evident.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Talking of the need to avoid naive\u00a0 <\/span>king sized arrogance as did Ambassador\u00a0<\/span>Kalil it brings to writer mind\u00a0<\/span>today’s\u00a0<\/span>papal humility\u00a0<\/span>where the\u00a0<\/span>present Pope Francis is\u00a0<\/span>a great celebration to the Catholic church. Emphasizing on the need for a poor church, he disowns his papal residence and even prefers public transport to the papal limousine.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the subject of humility, we in Sri Lanka can be boastful of the only intellectual in the most authentic sense, this country ‘s great privilege\u00a0<\/span>Dr. E.W. Adikaram<\/a>, who is not even remembered today. He was far removed from the highbrow of mundane living. His elevated mindset enabled an enhanced his thought process.\u00a0<\/span>He saw in the nationalist a lunatic and the world’s trappings, lunacy.\u00a0 <\/span>Despite the reservoir of intellectual depth, he led a life of unbounded simplicity.\u00a0<\/span>Unfortunately his intellectual stature failed the attention of both politician and media men opting for ‘elite meat ‘ rather than moral eminence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Having disoriented themselves from the external emotional baggage of customs, traditions and rituals,\u00a0<\/span>these men have striven to fall in line with moral congruence which incidentally is what religion is all about. We see this in the Buddha when he reached the highest level of existence on the 7th day of meditative power under the\u00a0<\/span>Bo tree\u00a0<\/span>in fact the nonexistent state, where he did not label\u00a0 <\/span>that supreme realization\u00a0<\/span>as Buddhism nor did the prophet when he saw the light of truth in\u00a0 <\/span>the cave\u00a0<\/span>on Mt. Hira necessitate him into perceiving it as Islam, not to forget Jesus that fell down in a swoon on Mt. Olives see his finding\u00a0 <\/span>as Christianity. They were far removed from the sociological theory of labels and to restrict them in that territory is to underestimate their greatness in whatever be the contributions\u00a0<\/span>they made for the benefit of humanity. <\/span><\/p>\n

Yet, these were not the only great personages the\u00a0<\/span>earth saw from the dawn of creation. There were\u00a0<\/span>others that reached such esoteric level of right thinking . Yet these great personages\u00a0<\/span>were highlighted, divided and\u00a0<\/span>tagged with societal labels\u00a0<\/span>to underscore\u00a0<\/span>the unjust socio\/ political\/ economic order far removed from equity\/ the root cause for\u00a0<\/span>international and national terrorism so conveniently overlooked by world leaders . <\/span><\/p>\n

The emotional state is two way – rational and irrational. Labelling leads to irrationality and devoid of labels there is clarity of thought or the\u00a0 <\/span>rationally emotional state. Great men saw the dangers in\u00a0 <\/span>labels and avoided them as much as they could.\u00a0<\/span>Religion and Politics\u00a0 <\/span>rooted in labels are the basis for\u00a0 <\/span>human relationships. Identity politics based on the labelling theory have brought man to the brink of disaster for these elements are based not on rational thought where emotions are misdirected. Take for instance Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel told Donald Trump whose restricted perception does not enable him to see beyond the glistening dollar that Germany wishes to see a value based relationship with the US and not solely\u00a0<\/span>business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Civilizational growth and the vast strides into development yielded positive results but not without its negative effects as the labelling theory progressively intensified. Following close upon its heals was the label of identity politics. Social stratification (the elite and the non-elite, the rich and the poor, the first and third worlds) caste based communities, religion, ethnicity, power orientation, hegemony, sexism\u00a0<\/span>and the like arose\u00a0<\/span>to exploit an already divided\u00a0 <\/span>social whole.\u00a0<\/span>The universal outlook has ceased to be and overtaken by particularism based on the politicization of those divides. No more do we see the spirit of the law but the law perse. Rituals, customs, traditions overpower and have overtaken the Dhamma or righteousness. Ironically these are mistaken for the path of moral upright. But in the midst of such, great men fascinated by the wonders of a higher goal have reached out to what modern man sees as futile for its incapacity to think in worldly terms. Their ability to simplify elitism and be free of the fetters that the modern system demands outshine all else which was writer concern at kick off point. Talking of simplicity leads to the culture of humility which sadly we Lankans lack for in each of them is the ‘cock of the walk’ arrogance that will not be fruitful even in reconciliation and settling national issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the terror group in Papua New Guinea met with that country’s head of state the talks almost ended up in smoke.\u00a0<\/span>In a judicious move,\u00a0<\/span>the president adjourned for lunch. Displaying greatness of character In the post lunch sessions that followed,\u00a0<\/span>the Guinean President walked up to the terrorist leader\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>presidential embrace of the gun trotting\u00a0<\/span>guy, with a sincere national as well as personal apology amidst tears was reciprocated in equal measure. “We have made mistakes against you all\u00a0<\/span>and we are sorry. We ask to be forgiven. We do not want you to be apart from us but a part of us, “was\u00a0<\/span>a presidential confession\u00a0<\/span>appeal and apology that lidded\u00a0<\/span>that country’s\u00a0<\/span>historic blood- letting, long drawn civil war.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is to avert human rights violations that international laws on war are outlined. This needs knowledgeable and enlightened leadership particularly\u00a0<\/span>those at the top giving orders. “Finish it as quickly as possible,” was\u00a0<\/span>supposedly the order given from above at war’s saturation point. The helpless forces forged ahead ignorant of the outcome. What’s more,\u00a0<\/span>they felt it was their job to protect what was seen as’ in defence of their motherland ‘and in doing so the\u00a0<\/span>impending moral dilemma was no ones concern let alone\u00a0<\/span>understandably\u00a0<\/span>so the men on the battle field. Today the internal power elite\u00a0 <\/span>see\u00a0<\/span>these men as those who rendered national service and cannot be charged for any irregularity. So the cross roads we have come to in facing national service that confront\u00a0 <\/span>the violation of\u00a0 <\/span>international war laws\u00a0<\/span>is no piano. Its a mismatch of misguided emotion and high degree intellectuality. But when\u00a0<\/span>international war laws\u00a0<\/span>are biased and discriminatory in application, it fails to command the respect that is expected. And so the tussle continues.<\/span><\/p>\n

The benchmark therefore\u00a0<\/span>for Reconciliation<\/a> is, the ability to\u00a0<\/span>apologize in terms of retrospective irregularities, the willingness to forgive \u00a0<\/span>and move on in the direction of equity and social justice. As long as one argues his or her case from a position of strength there is no hope for reconciliation except strife. Greatness lies in confession and apology – all, part of giving up external strength and building on the potential within. Elitists have, instead of giving up on\u00a0<\/span>such strength, moved towards power consolidation\u00a0<\/span>and self-fortification that mitigates this power within. Local and international elitism and hegemony remains the basis for terrorism of all sorts. The lives of great men that dismantled elitism in upholding moral integrity is the only inspirational\u00a0<\/span>source towards an equity based social order. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
