{"id":179949,"date":"2017-07-16T22:39:19","date_gmt":"2017-07-16T17:09:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=179949"},"modified":"2017-07-24T21:47:01","modified_gmt":"2017-07-24T16:17:01","slug":"jaffna-tamils-still-receive-police-summons-in-sinhala-language","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/jaffna-tamils-still-receive-police-summons-in-sinhala-language\/","title":{"rendered":"Jaffna Tamils Still Receive Police Summons In Sinhala Language"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sri Lanka\u2019s police have given scant regard to a basic right of a Tamil journalist in Jaffna and have issued summons to him in Sinhala, a language he is not proficient in.<\/p>\n<p>In a summon dated July 12, 2017, issued at 9.39 am, Jaffna based journalist has been summoned to be present at the Organized Crime Division Colombo over a media event he covered of Northern Provincial Council Member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=M.K.+Sivajilingam\">M.K. Sivajilingam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The summon has been issued under the seal of the OIC of the Achchuveli police.<\/p>\n<p>An observer pointed out that it was highly unethical for the police to issue such summons in the Sinhala language to a person who is not proficient in the language.
