{"id":183344,"date":"2017-10-24T01:41:02","date_gmt":"2017-10-23T20:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=183344"},"modified":"2017-10-24T03:24:17","modified_gmt":"2017-10-23T21:54:17","slug":"miserable-rankings-of-sri-lankas-top-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/miserable-rankings-of-sri-lankas-top-universities\/","title":{"rendered":"Miserable Rankings Of Sri Lanka\u2019s \u201cTop Universities\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Sri Lanka\u2019s so-called \u2018top universities\u2019 have fared miserably in the latest survey of ranked Universities in the world according to the internationally recognized <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.topuniversities.com\/university-rankings\/asian-university-rankings\/2018\">Quacquarelli Symonds<\/a> (QS) Asian University Rankings for 2018<\/span><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Convocation-University-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-183345\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Convocation-University--300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Convocation-University--300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Convocation-University-.jpg 703w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=University+of+Colombo\">University of Colombo<\/a> is ranked as 156, just one ranking higher than the little known Beijing Foreign Studies University. It has slipped even lower than the University of Dhaka at 124<\/span><span class=\"s5\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> place according to the rankings. The University of Colombo at one time offered honorary doctorates to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Colombo Telegraph learns that Former Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe\u2019s doctorate in law was approved by the University Higher Degrees Committee despite numerous spelling and grammatical mistakes in the thesis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Meanwhile the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=University+of+Peradeniya\">University of Peradeniya<\/a> is ranked even lower, at 242<\/span><span class=\"s5\"><sup>nd<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> place. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The QS ranking lists over 400 universities. It assesses universities looking at 10 primary indicators, including academic and employer reputation, the proportion of PhD qualified academic staff, and the proportion of inbound and outbound exchange students at the university. The list is topped by the US based universities, MIT, Stanford, Harvard and Caltech respectively. The UK\u2019s Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, University College, London (UCL) and Imperial College, London, are placed at 5, 6<\/span><span class=\"s5\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\">, 7<\/span><span class=\"s5\"><sup>th <\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> and 8<\/span><span class=\"s5\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> places respectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) is placed at 11<\/span><span class=\"s5\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> place and is the highest ranked from Asian Universities. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":183345,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2186,1,2375],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-183344","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-featured-news","category-news","category-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 -
