The Court of Appeal reserved its order on the matter of whether or not to issue notices on respondents and whether or not to grant relief to Gotabaya Rajapaksa<\/a> with respect to a Writ Petition submitted by him last Friday (November 24) for tomorrow (Wednesday, November 29).<\/p>\n

Rajapaksa, the former Secretary, Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, in this matter petitioned the Court of Appeal today to prevent the IGP Pujith Jayasundara, CID Director Shani Abeysekera, Financial Crimes Investigation Division DIG Ravi Waidyalankara, ASP Kamal Paliskara and the Attorney General from proceeding and\/or relying upon the Certificate filed under the offenses against the Public Property Act.<\/p>\n

Rajapaksa, in his petition, has claimed that several false allegations have been made and several false purported charges levied against him. Among the charges is that he was unlawfully responsible for a floating armoury which was found to have been docked at the Galle harbor with large consignment of weapons and ammunitions, allegations of corruption and irregularity in the purchase of MiG 27<\/a> in the year 2006, and the purported share manipulation at Lanka Hospitals Ltd and Leasing of Aircrafts at the time of tenure of the office of chairman at Mihin Lanka.<\/p>\n

He claims these allegations were baseless.<\/p>\n

Romesh de Silva PC with Ali Sabri PC and Sugath Caldera and Ruwantha Cooray instructed by Sanath Wijewardane appeared for the Petitioner.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile on Sunday, President Maithripala Sirisena<\/a>, in assurances given to civil society representatives<\/a>, has clearly implied that the prosecution of certain individuals suspected of wrongdoing was in the hands of the political leadership, namely himself and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe<\/a> and not necessarily a matter for law enforcement and prosecuting authorities.<\/p>\n

Gamini Viyangoda<\/a>, one of the civil society representatives who had met with Sirisena to discuss moves to unify the SLFP and the possible repercussions for the Unity Government, said the President had assured the group that the arrest of Gotabaya Rajapaksa<\/a>, brother of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and the former Secretary, Ministry of Defence and Urban Development ‘had been delayed pending the return of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.’<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
