President Maithripala Sirisena<\/a> has instructed officials to abolish the Gazette notification which amended a 1955 law prohibiting women from purchasing alcohol or working in an establishment that sells alcohol.<\/p>\n

The President, who himself consumes alcohol, made this announcement addressing a meeting in Agalawatte.<\/p>\n

“I expressed my view on the recent revision to the regulations on alcohol control to Prime Minister and Finance Minister, and the positive outcomes of my intervention will soon be seen,” he tweeted a short-while ago.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Minister of Finance Mangala Samaraweera had announced that the 62 year old law, which was not always strictly enforced, would be done away with.<\/p>\n
