It was Minister of Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faizer Mustapha<\/a> who had convinced President Maithripala Sirisena that he is entitled to serve until January 2021 and that he should seek a Supreme Court ruling on the matter, sources close to Mustapha told Colombo Telegraph.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The Supreme Court ruled that Sirisena’s term ends on January 8, 2020 effectively quashing a plea submitted by Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya to the effect that the term-reducing measures in the 19th Amendment did not apply to Sirisena.<\/p>\n

Colombo Telegraph learns that the President, in this instance, was effectively isolated from those of his advisors competent to offer opinions on such matters by Mustapha who prevailed on him, the President, to embark on this course of action that has caused him so much embarrassment.<\/p>\n
