The Colombo Telegraph found the cable from WikiLeaks database. The cable was written on December 1, 2009\u00a0by the US Ambassador to Colombo Patricia A. Butenis.<\/p>\n<p>Under the subheading of \u201cUNP LEADER: \u2018KEEP THE PRESSURE ON\u2019\u201d the US Ambassador wrote \u201c Wikremesinghe felt the Sri Lanka Sri Lankans didn\u2019t want to lose their relation with the U.S. and the government\u2019s criticism of U.S. recent remarks were \u2018complete nonsense.\u2019 He was not particularly concerned with<a href=\"http:\/\/colombotelegraph.com\/2011\/11\/11\/wikileaks-tissa-vitharana-thanked-us-for-pushing-sri-lanka-closer-to-china\/\"> China\u2019s developing relationship<\/a> with Sri Lanka. He countered that if <a href=\"http:\/\/colombotelegraph.com\/2011\/11\/16\/video-mahinda-rajapaksa-in-an-uncomfortable-seat\/\">China continued to expand its position in Sri Lanka, India would intervene <\/a>and keep a balance on that front.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the issue of media freedom, Wikremesinghe was very critical of government\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/colombotelegraph.com\/2011\/11\/16\/wikileaks-almost-all-media-reps-criticized-us-policy\/\">suppression of free press<\/a>. They also visited the South, East and IDP camp at\nManik Farm.  The StaffDel observed that the post-war situation in\nSri Lanka was complex, particularly in light of possible elections;\nSri Lankans no longer sensed a strong partnership with the U.S.; the\nU.S. \"tool box\" in dealing with the government of Sri Lanka (GSL)\nwas self-limited; a sense of palpable fear still hung over the media\nand civil society; and while the GSL was making progress and doing\nsome good things, SL had a long way to go on reconciliation and\nresettlement.  Recognizing SL's geo-strategic importance to the U.S.\nand the current and long-term bilateral relationship, many SL\ninterlocutors gave their recommendations on strengthening the\nrelationship and noted a need for more U.S. assistance for\nresettlement and demining.
