My dress fell off in front of Prince Charles at the Prince&#8217;s Trust, so I&#8217;m just living up to my reputation<\/i>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">&#8211; <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Kate Bush, British Singer<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">The UNP has suffered severe losses at the Local Authority Elections. The <i>Tamil\u00a0<\/i><\/span><i>National Alliance<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=TNA\">TNA<\/a>) has likewise sustained significant setbacks, not only electorally, but politically as well. The losses of the TNA (read,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>ITAK, <i>the prima\u00a0<\/i><span class=\"s1\"><i>donna<\/i>, calling all the shots in the Alliance) are not sporadic;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>but seem pervasive\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">across the entire electoral landscape of the Tamil heartland<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>in the North-East.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Compromising on core ideals whilst cohabiting with the Sirisena-Ranil\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">government has cost the TNA\/ITAK<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>dearly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Breach of Trust<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">At the dawn of New Year, TNA leader Mr. Sampanthan had found it propitious\u00a0<\/span>to bluff his way through an interview with the Indian daily, <i>Hindu<\/i>. (<b>The Hindu<\/b>, 03\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Jan.2018 \u2013 \u201c<i>We can\u2019t despair, we can\u2019t abandon things ,says Sri Lanka\u2019s R. Sampanthan<\/i>\u201d). <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Sampanthan had. <i>Inter alia,<\/i> asserted that the TNA \u201cmade the correct decision in\u00a0<\/span>backing Mr. Siriena\u201d at the Presidential Election in 2015. Nobody in the Tamil community had ever questioned TNA decision on that count.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our complaint is\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">not about backing Sirisena at the Presidential Election; but about backtracking on\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">the post-Election promises. compromising on the fundamental tenets of the\u00a0<\/span>ITAK and, in sum, about the breach and betrayal of the Tamil people\u2019s trust.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_148434\" style=\"width: 729px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/TNA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-148434\" class=\" wp-image-148434\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/TNA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"719\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/TNA.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/TNA-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 719px) 100vw, 719px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-148434\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">the three\u00a0musketeers\u00a0of the TNA<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>The Three<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0M<\/span>usketeers<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">TNA leadership cannot keep their eyes closed and assume that everything is\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">hunky dory about the Tamil issue. The electoral losses should have brought them\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">to their senses. If, on the contrary, the ill-fortune has<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>not dampened their <\/span><span class=\"s1\">sanguine enthusiasm in contumaciously consorting with<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>sleazy Southern <\/span><span class=\"s1\">partners, it lies in the logic of history that the TNA\/ITAK may<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>slowly sink into <\/span><span class=\"s1\">oblivion. To some of us, it will be a very painful prospect.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Mr.Ranil Wickremesinghe<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>had since admitted his<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>missteps and accepted <\/span><span class=\"s1\">responsibility for the UNP debacle.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\">Where are the three<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>musketeers<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>of the TNA <\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u2013 Sampanthan, Sumanthiran and Senathirajah \u2013<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>whose<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>post-war<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>polemic and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">gimmicks have led the Tamil people down the slippery<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>slope ?. Their silence on <\/span><span class=\"s1\">the electoral losses is deafening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>Corrective<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0S<\/span>teps<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0N<\/span>eeded<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Mr. Sampanthan had, in parliament, made a post-election statement, targeting <\/span><span class=\"s1\">the ethnic majority audience and his speech merits a round of applause. In regard\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">to the Tamils<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>the trio, collectively or individually, ought to admit<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<i>nostra culpa<\/i>\u201d\/ <\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u201c<i>mea culpa\u201d<\/i>. Further, the revisionist leadership should take concrete corrective <\/span><span class=\"s1\">steps to mend their wayward escapades and regain their ideological roots. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c<i>Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it<\/i>\u201d (George\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Santayana<i>?) <\/i>This pithy aphorism serves to explain the rationale for TNA\/ITAK\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">electoral reverses.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Ever since it was founded in Dec. 1949, the ITAK (a.k.a, as Federal Party) had <\/span><span class=\"s1\">incrementally eroded the voter base of the ACTC (<i>All Ceylon Tamil Congress<\/i>) led <\/span><span class=\"s1\">by Mr.G.G. Ponnambalam, accusing the latter as an appendage\/proxy of UNP.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Thus, ITAK had, eventually, dislodged the ACTC from its primacy and emerged as <\/span><span class=\"s1\">the dominant voice of the Tamils. ITAK had nurtured and nourished its image as <\/span><span class=\"s1\">an uncompromising, radical anti-Establishment entity, passionately committed to <\/span><span class=\"s1\">the Tamil nationalist cause. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>\u201c<i>Hath<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Havula<\/i>\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>National Government<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Following the March 1965 General Elections, both the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>ITAK and the ACTC became\u00a0<\/span>constituents of the \u201c<i>Hath Havula<\/i>\u201d coalition government, ostensibly designated as \u201c<i>National government<\/i>\u201d, under Mr. Dudley<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Senanayake (whose UNP won only 66\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">seats and the SLFP 41 seats in the 151-seats Assembly). Since the ITAK <i>mores<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">enjoined<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>the elected M.P.s not to accept ministerial positions, Mr. M. Tiruchelvam\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Q.C. of the ITAK was appointed a Senator and sworn in as Minister of Local Government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>Joint opposition played<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u2018communal card\u2019<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">(<i>A digression may be warranted)<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In an attempt to oust the government, the\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Joint opposition (SLFP-LSSP-CP) played the incendiary \u2018communal card\u2019 accusing\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">the UNP of entering into a secret pact with ITAK leader S.J.V. Chelvanayakam. Their\u00a0<\/span>campaign theme was that Dudley had agreed to a Tamil Federal state and thus had paved the way for separatism. The crass campaign slogan was, \u201c<i>Dudleyge\u00a0<\/i><i>Bade Masala Vade<\/i>\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The UNP-ITAK relationship ruptured soon and, in Nov.1968, Minister Tiruchelvam was obliged to resign. However, until 1970, ITAK continued to extend critical support to the government.\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Typically, the style and substance of Rajapakses\u2019 post-2015 manoeuvres to regain\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">their lost kingdom<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>&#8211; and their ultra-nationalist slogans to seduce the Sinhala-<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Buddhist constituency \u2013 tend to recall the 1965-70 scenario and the stratagem of\u00a0<\/span>the SLFP-led United Front to oust Dudley government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>ITAK paid heavy penalty<\/b><\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">The ITAK paid a heavy penalty for cohabiting with the UNP. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At the May 1970 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Parliamentary Elections ITAK<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>heavyweights, Dr.E.M.V. Naganathan (Nallur) <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Amirthalingam (Vaddukoddai), S.M. Rasamanickam (Paddiruppu) suffered defeat <\/span><span class=\"s1\">at the hands of nondescripts. Even in some electorates where the ITAK managed <\/span><span class=\"s1\">to win, they scraped through by a measly majority \u2013 Jafffna (by 56 votes), Mannar <\/span><span class=\"s1\">(69), Point Pedro (315). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>Nasty<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Experience<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">ITAK\u2019s nuptial journey with the \u201cnational government\u201d was a nasty experience to\u00a0<\/span>them. The transitory alliance with the UNP had diluted ITAK\u2019s distinct Tamil nationalist identity and tarnished their integrity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Sadly, Sampanthan had been oblivious to the bitter 1965-70 experience. True, that he was not in party\/<span class=\"s1\">electoral politics at that time. But then, the 1965 experiment in the \u201cNational\u201d\u00a0<\/span>government was part of contemporary history.\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">When all is said and done, the 1965-70 <i>entente<\/i> between ITAK and the UNP could\u00a0<\/span>be rationalized. The<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>relationship had a <i>raison d&#8217;\u00eatre<\/i> . Dudley and Chelva<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>were\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">partners in the 7-party coalition and their transactions were transparent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>TNA &#8211; Most Loyal Opposition<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Since British Statesman George Canning\u2019s time (1822-1827), the official\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Opposition in the House of Commons was referred to, somewhat jokingly, as\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHer Majesty\u2019s Most Loyal Opposition\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Judging by the conduct of Opposition <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Leader Sampanthan and his sidekick Sumanthiran,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and their camaraderie with <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Maithri-Ranil government &#8211;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>defending, guiding and babysitting the ruling <\/span><span class=\"s1\">establishment &#8211; we may, without any hint of mockery, call the official\u00a0<\/span>Opposition as \u201c<i>Their Excellencies\u2019 Most Loyal Opposition.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>Not at arm\u2019s length<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">The Official Opposition has been more loyal to the government than even the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">occupants of the Treasury Bench. TNA has failed to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>stay at an arm\u2019s length. The\u00a0<\/span>relationship is unethical, as though they have been<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>cohabiting in concubinage.\u00a0<span class=\"s1\"><i>Let me cite a few instances only to illustrate their intimacy<\/i>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">It was not a coincidence that Sampanthan was appointed Leader of the\u00a0<\/span>Opposition on 3<span class=\"s5\"><sup>rd<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Sept. 2015 just ten days before the UNHRC-30<\/span><span class=\"s5\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Session\u00a0<\/span>was to commence at Geneva. The draft Resolution on Sri Lanka was tabled on 27<span class=\"s5\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Sept.2015. TNA leader could not have missed the media comments\u00a0<\/span>on his <span class=\"s1\"> appointment &#8211; suggestive of government\u2019s<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>stratagem to mollify\u00a0<\/span>the demands of the sponsors of the Resolution. The BBC report said: \u201c<i>His appointment is seen as a step towards ethnic<\/i> <i>reconciliation after 26\u00a0<\/i><i>years of civil war ended in 2009<\/i>.\u201d (<i>BBC News, 3<\/i> <i> Sept.2015<\/i>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">TNA leaders had often claimed that it<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>was their government and that they\u00a0<\/span>were obliged to protect and defend it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">In early 2017, even before the government leaders could<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>worry about the\u00a0<\/span>oncoming UNHRC sessions in March, Sumanthiran M.P. had volunteered to give an extra two more years to the government to meet its obligations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">TNA M.P.s have always been faithfully voting for the Budget, including\u00a0<\/span>Defence allocations. There have been legitimate complaints about militarization of North-East, military excesses in NE, installing\/erecting Buddhist statues\/ shrines in NE with armed forces\u2019 support.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, TNA had never moved even a <i>Token Cut Motion<\/i> in Parliament to register their protest against any specific allocations in Budget proposals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Their bonding with the government was so strong and so much cherished,\u00a0<\/span>that the Opposition Leader raised nary a word against the bond scammers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>Back to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Square One<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">The TNA has been bending over backwards and for over three years<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>doing the\u00a0<\/span>bidding of the government to the point of servitude &#8211;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and, to no avail.\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">A whole generation of Tamils have been crying their hearts out for justice &#8211; for\u00a0<\/span>resolution\/redress of their grievances. And, a host of critical questions continue\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">to cry out for answers \u2013 vis-\u00e0-vis: missing persons, political prisoners, military\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">occupation of civilian lands, PTA, Demilitarization, war crimes etc. On top of them, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">the question of Constitutional Reforms remains a conundrum. Can a government,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">crippled and on crutches today, deliver what it could not do when it was <\/span><span class=\"s1\">supposedly strong and sturdy?<\/span><span class=\"s6\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\">We are back to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>square one, once again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s3\"><b> TNA\/ITAK voter base<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>eroded<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Lately, TNA\u2019s soiled image as an adulterated outfit had helped Gajendrakumar\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>TNPF\/ACTC to expand its voter base. That said, how come a sizable section of traditional ITAK supporters have voted<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>for Sinhala ethnocentric parties and their\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">puppets \u2013 EPDP, UNP, SLFP, SLPP?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>TNA leadership has blurred the boundary lines\u00a0<\/span>separating the two antagonistic ideologies \u2013 Sinhala ethnocentrism vs. Tamil nationalism. Perhaps, the Tamil electors had thought they would rather vote for the principals (EPDP, UNP, SLFP) than voting for their proxy (TNA).\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Post-war Tamil politics is a serious business.
