{"id":193561,"date":"2018-09-16T15:24:08","date_gmt":"2018-09-16T09:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=193561"},"modified":"2018-09-16T15:37:09","modified_gmt":"2018-09-16T10:07:09","slug":"twelve-piano-prisms-dr-tanya-ekanayakas-newest-solo-album-released-worldwide-by-naxos-records","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/twelve-piano-prisms-dr-tanya-ekanayakas-newest-solo-album-released-worldwide-by-naxos-records\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Twelve Piano Prisms&#8217;, Dr Tanya Ekanayaka&#8217;s Newest Solo Album Released Worldwide By Naxos Records\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8216;<b>Twelve Piano Prisms<\/b>&#8216; the newest solo album of works for the piano composed, performed and produced by Sri Lankan-British concert composer-pianist Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Tanya+Ekanayaka\">Tanya Ekanayaka<\/a> was launched worldwide by Naxos Records, the world\u2019s largest independent record label, under its Grand Piano label, on 14<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> September. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The album was recorded\u00a0by Roderick Buchanan-Dunlop.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dr.-Tanya-Ekanayaka.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-193562 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dr.-Tanya-Ekanayaka.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dr.-Tanya-Ekanayaka.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dr.-Tanya-Ekanayaka-300x250.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dr.-Tanya-Ekanayaka-768x640.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The twelve works\/prisms in the album evolved between 2016 and 2017 and correspond to the twelve primary notes of the keyboard.\u00a0They have been inspired not only by classical styles and indigenous world music but also by contemporary pop, rock and film music.\u00a0The album extends a concept introduced by Dr. Ekanayaka in her debut album \u2018Reinventions: Rhapsodies for Piano\u2019 released worldwide by Naxos Records in 2015 while also introducing a new concept. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">While autobiographical, the prisms blend unusual adaptations of traditional melodies of Dr. Ekanayaka\u2019s homeland Sri Lanka and countries she has been associated with musically. These countries include Armenia, China, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.\u00a0Among the Sri Lankan melodies re-presented in this album are eight vannams; the remaining ten vannams were represented in her first album \u2018Reinventions: Rhapsodies for Piano\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u2018The term prism is intended to reflect the manner in which sounds stemming from diverse cultures, eras and the very core of my being, meld, transform and refract through the piano to emerge as new narratives\u2019 says Dr. Ekanayaka. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The album and its first prism, \u2018E Flat \u2013 July 2016\/17\u2019 were featured on Essential Classics of BBC Radio 3 on 12<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> September ahead of its release. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The structure and style of Dr. Ekanayaka&#8217;s music is also influenced by her ambidexterity, multilingualism and training in Linguistics.
