Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran<\/a> requested the government to release the coastal strip between Palaitivu and Pallikuda and open it up for tourism investment.<\/p>\n

Wigeswaran said, the strip is currently occupied by the Sri Lanka Navy and therefore there was no economic activity in the area.<\/p>\n

Wigenswaran made this request to the government while speaking at the World Tourism day event at the Kalilasapathy Auditorium of the University of Jaffna.He urged Tourism Development Minister John Amaratunga and Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority Chairman Kavan Ratnayaka to make necessary interventions in this regard.<\/p>\n

“There are so many places in the North,” Wigneswaran said, “that could be developed as tourism hot spots. But, lack of comprehensive planning and anomalies in fund distribution has hampered the industry’s growth in the province,” Wigneswaran, who is also the Tourism Minister for North, said, adding that he had presented a number of reports to the central government on the matter.<\/p>\n

He also called for development of Delft Island, the stronghold of EPDP Leader Douglas Devananda, as a potential tourism hub that could compete with Pasikuda in the Eastern province. However, Wigneswaran said, the tourism industry should not destroy or alter the social fabric of the North.<\/p>\n

“We have no reservations about working with the Centre or institutions coming under it as long as it respects our regional rights,” the Chief Ministry stressed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
