Colonel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Kalana+Amunupure\">Kalana Amunupure<\/a> from Mali as requested by the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/UN-peacekeeper-Sri-Lankan-Army.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-194494\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/UN-peacekeeper-Sri-Lankan-Army-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/UN-peacekeeper-Sri-Lankan-Army-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/UN-peacekeeper-Sri-Lankan-Army-768x562.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/UN-peacekeeper-Sri-Lankan-Army.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Amunupura was the Commander of Sri Lankan Army&#8217;s UN mission in Mali. The UN previously requested the Sri Lankan government to recall the senior military officer due to war crimes charges levelled against him.<\/p>\n<p>This was the first time the UN has asked the Government of Sri Lanka to repatriate a peacekeeper because of his participation in alleged war crimes during the country\u2019s civil war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are delighted to see the dossier we submitted on Amunupure to the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in June this year has now resulted in this step,\u201d said the International Truth and Justice Project\u2019s executive director, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Yasmin+Sooka\">Yasmin Sooka<\/a>, in a statement earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe still don\u2019t know how many tens of thousands of Tamils died in the 2009 war and not one person has been held accountable \u2013 maybe this small step can give survivors a little hope that one day they will get justice.
