In an unprecedented move, 119 Parliamentarians representing the main political parties in Parliament except for the UPFA unanimously passed a resolution calling for immediate convention of Parliament.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In the resolution, they also stated in no und=certain terms that the appointment of Mahinda Rajapaksa<\/a> as the Prime Minister and all subsequent appointments are unacceptable.<\/p>\n

MPs from the United National Front, the Tamil National Alliance, and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna were present at the meeting.<\/p>\n

Parliamentary sources said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe<\/a>, four JVP Parliamentarians including party leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake<\/a> and three TNA Parliamentarians were absent at the meeting due to unavoidable reasons.<\/p>\n

However, all absent MPs pledged support to the resolution and it finally drew the support of 119 MPs, demonstrating Rajapaksa had failed to secure a simple majority in the House.<\/p>\n

“The MPs resolved that the purported removal of the Prime Minister and the purported appointment of another Prime Minister by the President on 26 October 2018 was unconstitutional and illegal. Also they demand that Speaker disregard the purported prorogation of Parliament and convene Parliament forthwith,” TNA Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran said.<\/p>\n

Responding to the MPs, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya<\/a> said President Maithripala Sirisena<\/a> had promised to convene Parliament on November 07.<\/p>\n

The Speaker also said he would convene Parliament on November 07 in accordance with powers vested in him, if the President failed to issue the gazette notification today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
