UPFA Parliamentarian Mahinda Samarasinghe<\/a>, while addressing the ‘Cabinet briefing’ of the purported government, blatantly lied about President Maithripala Sirisena’s involvement in the attempt to transfer CID officer Nishantha Silva<\/a> to the Negombo Police Division.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Samarasinghe said President Sirisena had no involvement in ordering the transfer of Silva who handled several high-profile CID investigations including the Lasantha Wickrematunge<\/a> murder and the abductions and killings of 11 youth by a Navy gang.<\/p>\n

However, a letter sent by IGP Pujith Jayasundara<\/a> to Defence Ministry Secretary Hemasiri Fernando clearly stated that Nishantha Silva was to be transferred on the instructions of President Sirisena. Another letter sent by Director CID Senior DIG Ravi Seneviratne to the National Police Commission revealed that President Sirisena ordered the transfer of Silva after Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, a suspect in the Navy abductions case, fabricated false allegations against the CID officer at a security council meeting.<\/p>\n

The move to transfer the CID finally proved to be futile as the National Police commission made a swift intervention and inquired from the IGP about the circumstances leading to the transfer of Nishantha Silva. Upon the Police Commission’s inquiry, IGP Pujith Jayasundara issued a backdated letter and withdrew the transfer of Silva.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in another controversial move, IP Neomal Rangajeewa, who was arrested over the killings of prisoners during the Wlikada riots, has been reinstated in his position at the Police Narcotics Bureau. Police sources said the reinstatement had taken place following a recommendation by IGP Pujith Jayasundara.<\/p>\n

The case against Rangajeewa is still being heard and he was released on bail recently.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
