Chief of Defence Staff Ravindra Wijegunaratne<\/a> and his aides have attempted to assault\u00a0and shoot Laksiri Galagamage, a Lieutenant Commander of the Navy, a witness in the case of abductions and killings of 11 youth by a Navy gang, at the Navy Headquarters today, Colombo Telegraph can reveal.<\/p>\n

Galagamage, an officer who gave evidence against Wijegunaratne in the case, had been confronted by Wijegunaratne as he walked out of the officers mess of the Navy Headquarters, around 2 PM today.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

It is believed that Wijegunaratne, a retired Navy Commander, had arrived at the Navy HQ today upon hearing that Galagamage was in the mess. The moment Wijegunaratne saw Galagamage at the Navy HQ, the CDS, the most senior serving military officer in the country, had screamed in obscene language and ordered his aide to bring the officer to him.<\/p>\n

At this point, Lt. Commander Galagamage had attempted to avoid the confrontation by running away and the aide of the CDS had chased after him wielding a pistol. Galagamage, fearing the aide would shoot him, had knocked the gun out of the aide’s hand and rushed out of the HQ premises.<\/p>\n

During this brief confrontation, Galagamage’s mobile phone had fallen out of his pocket and Wijegunaratne’s aide had snatched it.<\/p>\n

When the assaulted Navy Officer went to the Fort Police Station to lodge a complaint over the assault and the theft, the OIC of the police station had come under pressure from Wijegunaratne to refrain from recording complaint.<\/p>\n

The OIC of the Fort Police station had not succumbed to the pressure and had recorded the complaint. He had also personally visited the Navy Headquarters this evening to conduct the initial inquiry in relation to the matter.<\/p>\n

At this point, the senior Navy officers, on the instructions of Wijegunaratne, had prevented the OIC from visiting the place where the incident took place. Unable to conduct the initial inquiry owing to the actions of senior Navy officers, the OIC had made a log entry about the incident.<\/p>\n

Wijegunaratne is a suspect in the high-profile abductions case and has been accused of aiding and abetting former Navy officer Chandana Hettiarachchi alias Navy Sampath, the main suspect and the central figure of the criminal ‘Navy gang’.<\/p>\n

The CID has summoned Wijegunaratne to record a statement over the abductions and killings. on November 27.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
