President Maithripala Sirisena<\/a> has convened a meeting with all Parliamentarians of the SLFP and the SLPP as he ends the seventh day after the SLFP convention in Colombo, where the President promised to resolve the current political crisis in a week.<\/p>\n

Sirisena<\/p><\/div>\n

Addressing an SLFP convention at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium last week, President Sirisena promised to resolve the political crisis in seven days and asked the public to place trust in his words. However, no meaningful action has been taken by the President thus far, to resolve the current gridlock.<\/p>\n

The meeting with SLFP and SLPP MPs comes amid reports that President Sirisena is planning to hold a referendum on a General Election if the Supreme Court gives a ruling against his gazette to dissolve Parliament.<\/p>\n

Sources close to Sirisena said the meeting with SLFP and SLPP MPs was called to make a final decision on President Sirisena’s future course of action, after the Supreme Court ruling.<\/p>\n

Informed political sources added that the Supreme Court’s ruling on the dissolution of Parliament would come on Wednesday or Thursday. The Supreme Court, on Friday, extended the interim order on the dissolution of Parliament until the ruling of the case.<\/p>\n

Sirisena held a special meeting with Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya yesterday at his official residence. Although the details of this meeting were not revealed to third parties, it is assumed that the meeting centred around the President’s “future options”. Meanwhile, several UPFA Parliamentarians told the media that the President would make a request to the Chief Justice, through the Attorney General, to deliver the verdict of the case on the dissolution of Parliament, without delay.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
