In a letter to President Maithripala Sirisena, former President Chandrika Kumaratunga<\/a><\/strong> said she would not betray the principles they stood by on January 08, 2015.<\/p>\n

Kumaratunga, in her letter, had urged Sirisena to give leadership to fulfil the promises given to the public at the last Presidential election.<\/p>\n

Kumaratunga had made it clear that she did not approve of Sirisena’s plans to form an alliance with the group rejected by the majority of Sri Lankan voters at the last Presidential and Parliamentary elections.<\/p>\n

“I have not forgotten the magnitude of bribery, corruption and thuggery that prevailed in this country between 2005 and 2015. I have also not forgotten that the majority of voters rejected the same group in a fiercely contested election in January 2015,” Kumaratunga said.<\/p>\n

She has also forwarded a letter written by a group of SLFP organizers to the President. In their letter, the SLFP organizers have cautioned the President against entering into an alliance with “racist elements” trying to divide the SLFP.<\/p>\n

The letter is a strong response to Sirisena’s attempts to join forces with the Rajapaksa group and the Sri Lanka Podujana Party ( SLPP) to contest upcoming elections.<\/p>\n

The copies of the letter have been sent to former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, former Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Senior Vice Chairman Nima Siripala de Siva, General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekera and National Organizer Duminda Dissanayake.<\/p>\n

SLFP sources said 136 organizers of the party had extended support to the group which sent this letter to President Sirisena.<\/p>\n

While pledging their continued solidarity with the party, the group requests Sirisena to strengthen the SLFP as a party as a modern democratic party that can move forward with the global political trends. They reassured that they did not intend to join the UNP, but urged Sirisena to take their concerns into serious consideration.<\/p>\n

They claim that those who fell out of power in January 2015 are attempting to divide the SLFP and serve the political agenda of the UNP.<\/p>\n
