Fort Magistrate today dismissed the murder charges brought against suspended IGP Pujith Jayasundara<\/span><\/strong><\/a> and ex-Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, and released both on a surety bail of Rs. 500,000 each.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the second major embarrassment faced by Sirisena. Last week the Supreme Court issued an interim order against<\/span><\/strong><\/a> his plan to proceed with implementing the death penalty and today, his attempt to penalize two offiers who refused to help him cover up his culpability in the Easter Sunday bombings, were released by the Court.<\/p>\n

Fort Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne had dismissed AG’s charges against the duo Pujith and Hemasiri, stating there is insufficient evidence to justify their continued detention.<\/p>\n

The two were arrested last week after AG issued an irked message to the media through his Coordinating Secretary, stating the Police had not put his instructions to action in arresting Pujith and Hemasiri before Court.<\/p>\n

As per the charges that were brought against Pujith and Hemasiri by AG Dappula, if convicted, they could face the death penalty and up to 52 years in jail.<\/p>\n

As per the AG\u2019s letter to the Acting IGP about two weeks ago, sufficient evidence is available to charge Pujith and Hemasiri with below provisions of the Penal Code:
\n296. Punishment for murder.<\/p>\n

298. Causing death by negligence.<\/p>\n

328. Causing hurt by an act which endangers life or the personal safety of others.<\/p>\n
