{"id":203450,"date":"2019-07-18T17:29:41","date_gmt":"2019-07-18T11:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=203450"},"modified":"2019-07-19T13:38:08","modified_gmt":"2019-07-19T08:08:08","slug":"shafi-saga-complaint-lodged-before-jsc-against-dubious-conduct-of-kurunegala-magistrate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/shafi-saga-complaint-lodged-before-jsc-against-dubious-conduct-of-kurunegala-magistrate\/","title":{"rendered":"Shafi Saga: Complaint Lodged Before JSC Against Dubious Conduct Of Kurunegala Magistrate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sri Lanka Young Journalists&#8217; Association has lodged a complaint with the Judicial Services Commission requesting a probe into the dubious conduct of Kurunegala Magistrate Sampath Hewawasam in the case heard against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Shafi\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Dr. Shafi Seigu Shihabdeen<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Magistrate Sampath Hewawasam\u2019s dubious intentions came to light when it was revealed his wife Hiroshinie Hewawasam, is an employee of the Kurunegala hospital, working under racist hospital Director Dr. A M S Weerabandara, when the Magistrate dismissed the State\u2019s withdrawal of the three-month detention order against Dr. Shafi and further remanded the Doctor last week.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_202080\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dr-Shafi-Siyabdeen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-202080\" class=\"size-full wp-image-202080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dr-Shafi-Siyabdeen.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dr-Shafi-Siyabdeen.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dr-Shafi-Siyabdeen-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dr-Shafi-Siyabdeen-768x429.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-202080\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Shafi Siyabdeen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ideally, the Magistrate should have stepped down instead of presiding over the case against Dr. Shafi but he chose to take the case up despite glaring conflicts of interest and now it is said that he even manipulated evidence that painted his pal &#8211; Dr. A M S Weerabandara in an unflattering light.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after the Kurunegala Magistrate further remanded Dr. Shafi &#8211; despite the CID B report clearing him of any wrongdoing &#8211; details emerged of the Magistrate manipulating evidence presented before the Court last week in order to paint Dr. Shafi in a guilty light while ensuring his partner-in-crime Hospital Director Weerabandara escaped any criticism.<\/p>\n<p>In the interconnected web involving racist hospital authorities, racist area Police including the Kurunegala DIG Kithsiri Bandara with free access to media spun the web of lies to trap Dr. Shafi. Now it appears the parties invested have taken every measure possible to ensure their tracks are covered, but to no avail.<\/p>\n<p>The Police had received some 615 complaints regarding \u2018sterilizations\u2019 by Dr. Shafi and almost 468 had been lodged following the hysteria on sterilizations. Eventually the number of investigatable complaints had dropped to 11 and further probing had revealed only three of them could have been effectively investigated.<\/p>\n<p>The nine other claims were fabrications of the Hospital Director Weerabandara to which includes falsified hospital records, concerns lodged as complaints and adding tubal ligations that were consented to, as those performed without consent.<\/p>\n<p>This complaint against the Magistrate comes against the backdrop of another investigation launched by the Special Crimes Unit of the Police, to verify the \u2018sterilization\u2019 allegations made against Dr. Shafi as per the instructions of the Acting IGP.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":202080,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2186,1,2375],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-203450","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-featured-news","category-news","category-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 -
