The Constitutional Council today (Aug 9) unanimously rejected president Maithripala Sirisena’s nomination, Luckshmi Menaka Minu Jayawickrema<\/strong><\/a><\/span>,, for the position of the Court of Appeal justice, Colombo Telegraph reliably learns.<\/p>\n

According to highly placed sources the council after taking cognisance of the letter<\/span><\/strong><\/a> sent to them by the Sri Lanka Bar Association and\u00a0the Colombo Telegraph story<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has arrived at this decision.<\/p>\n

The CC had written back to the President requesting him to send a list of nominations giving priority to career judges, Colombo Telegraph learns.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the week the President took steps to forward the name of his additional secretary of legal without considering two other names that was recommended by the Chief Justice and the Attorney General. This immediately was criticised by the legal fraternity and BASL cautioned the council of bad precedents such an appointment could set.<\/p>\n
