Anaga<\/a> &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once again the dead Bhikkus have become the talk of the town and a \u2018burning\u2019 issue too.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The first one was that of the Ven. Meegahajandura Gunaratna whose dead body was taken in circles and finally \u2018burnt\u2019 at the Jaffna esplanade with the blessings of the Magistrate, who heard the case against the burning of the body at the Jaffna esplanade. (Please refer my article \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/funerals\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Funerals<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u2019 which appeared in the Colombo Telegraph of 2\/5\/18 in reply to Mr Jehan Perera\u2019s writing in the LMD magazine of March 2018.)<\/p>\n<p>Now, the \u2018cancer\u2019 of burning the dead body of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/violence-again-at-neeravi-pillaiyar-in-mulaitivu-district\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">another Bhikku<\/span><\/strong><\/a> has spread to Mullaitivu, that too in the premises of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Pillaiyar+Temple\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Pillaiyar Temple<\/span><\/strong><\/a> (Ganadeyo Temple)Who is revered by Buddhists too to obtain personal favours, as lord Buddha apparently does not believe in granting favours<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>to his devotes &#8211; rightly so. In Jaffna the magistrate condoned the actions of the army who seem to have their way and the Magistrate appear to have succumbed to it.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/burning-the-dead-body-of-another-Bhikku-has-spread-to-Mullaitivu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-205030\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/burning-the-dead-body-of-another-Bhikku-has-spread-to-Mullaitivu.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/burning-the-dead-body-of-another-Bhikku-has-spread-to-Mullaitivu.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/burning-the-dead-body-of-another-Bhikku-has-spread-to-Mullaitivu-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/burning-the-dead-body-of-another-Bhikku-has-spread-to-Mullaitivu-768x429.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>It appears that the Srilankan Buddhists have passed a \u2018No- confidence\u2019 motion on Lord Buddha as far as their demand for favours are concerned.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>But, in Mullaitivu, the Magistrate ruled against the action by led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Galagoda+Atte+Gnassara\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Galagoda Atte Gnassara<\/span><\/strong><\/a> Thera, who had been let loose by our yahapalanaya president to commit more sins under his protection. The Magistrate ordered the \u2018Cancerous Body\u2019 be burnt outside the boundaries of the Pillaiyar temple. Nevertheless, the jurisdiction of the court was deliberately violated by the Armed Forces, Police Service, Lord Buddha\u2019s Representatives- the Hamudurus, and the people who were encouraged by the Trio to desecrate the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u2018Gods Little Acre\u2019 by burning the \u2018Cancerous Body\u2019 in the temple premises.<\/p>\n<p>I have deliberately used the word \u2018burning\u2019 instead the word \u2018cremation\u2019 purely because the latter is too good a word to be used on those who believe in the spread of \u2018cancerous impunity\u2019 which cannot be controlled even by chemotherapy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It may only be treated by amputation of the affected part \u2013the head and the brain within, if they have one.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Cancer\u2019 of burning has spread from Jaffna to Mullaitheevu and from Mullaitheevu it may spread to Kanniya in the Trincomalee District, where hot wells are situated with a Pillayar Temple within the premises.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The people, who refresh themselves after a warm water bath of varying temperatures, worship the Pillaiyar and leave the place with great psychological satisfaction. Even, the Sinhala Buddhists bathers\u2019 worship the said Pillayar after their bath, without any apparent inclination to capture the premises and plant the statue of Lord Buddha.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, in the recent past Hamudrus want to demolish the Pillayar temple and plant lord Buddha\u2019s statue, convert it into an exclusive Buddhist place of worship and claim ownership to the premises despite the fact a lady has documentary evidence to prove its ownership.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>It is rather unfortunate that \u2018Pillaiyar\u2019 and Lord Buddha are dragged into legal battles to ascertain the ownership of their \u2018residence\u2019. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>If this type of attitude of the Hamudurus are left unchecked, it could lead to disastrous consequences.
