{"id":205098,"date":"2019-09-28T19:37:56","date_gmt":"2019-09-28T14:07:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=205098"},"modified":"2019-09-29T22:17:08","modified_gmt":"2019-09-29T16:47:08","slug":"exclusive-case-filed-alleging-gota-was-never-conferred-sri-lankan-citizenship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/exclusive-case-filed-alleging-gota-was-never-conferred-sri-lankan-citizenship\/","title":{"rendered":"Exclusive: Case Filed Alleging Gota Was Never Conferred Sri Lankan Citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A case has been filed in the Court of Appeal by Civil Society activists Prof. Chndraguptha Thenuwara and Gamini Viyangoda alleging that citizenship was never conferred on former Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and SLPP Presidential hopeful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Gotabaya+Rajapaksa\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Gotabaya Rajapaksa<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, and that he is not a Sri Lankan citizen.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_144967\" style=\"width: 886px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gotabaya.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-144967\" class=\" wp-image-144967\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gotabaya.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"876\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gotabaya.jpg 625w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gotabaya-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 876px) 100vw, 876px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-144967\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former secretary to the MOD &#8211; Gotabaya<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The legal action comes amid an explosive investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department into Gotabaya Rajapaksa&#8217;s passports, dual citizenship, visas and NIC documentation.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week the CID told the Colombo Chief Magistrate&#8217;s Court that the file containing Rajapaksa&#8217;s dual citizenship papers and applications could not be located at any of the Government departments and ministries dealing with citizenship matters.<\/p>\n<p>The CID reported facts to the Chief Magistrate that the Department of Immigration, the Ministry of Defence and the Home Affairs Ministry did not have custody of Rajapaksa&#8217;s file.<\/p>\n<p>The Chief Magistrate has ordered the Immigration Department to hand over all files connected to Rajapaksa&#8217;s dual citizenship to the CID.
