{"id":205262,"date":"2019-10-05T23:30:01","date_gmt":"2019-10-05T18:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=205262"},"modified":"2019-10-08T17:27:41","modified_gmt":"2019-10-08T11:57:41","slug":"boys-had-a-boys-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/boys-had-a-boys-party\/","title":{"rendered":"Boys Had A Boys Party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">By <a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Arundathie+Sangakkara\">Arundathie Sangakkara<\/a> &#8211;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now that the Post-Ranil-Partum snotty wailing of the UNP Face bookers is replaced by their <i>\u201cabsolute shock<\/i>\u201d at a Gotabaya comeback as of 6PM yesterday, let\u2019s get back to business, shall we?<\/p>\n<p>The UNPers are a funny lot.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Sajith-Premadasa-UNP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-205263\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Sajith-Premadasa-UNP.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"899\" height=\"599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Sajith-Premadasa-UNP.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Sajith-Premadasa-UNP-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Sajith-Premadasa-UNP-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Sajith-Premadasa-UNP-128x86.jpg 128w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 899px) 100vw, 899px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some have been boycotting elections because \u201cas long as Ranil is the leader, there\u2019s no point\u201d. They have been their worst party enemy, self-propagating the notion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Sajith+Premadasa\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Sajith Premadasa<\/span><\/strong><\/a> along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Kili+Maharajah\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Kili Maharajah<\/span><\/strong><\/a> commercially sustained &#8211; called \u201cRanil cannot win\u201d. Since 2000, the UNP has formed two governments under Ranil\u2019s leadership. Many arm chair politically inclined and Facebookers were ranting \u201cJust Go Ranil and Give It To Sajith\u201d. They called Ranil names, invoked his possibly sainted mother and criticized him in raw filth. Then they see one cute little picture of Hema Premadasa with \u201coh-my god I won, I won!\u201d Miss Universe kind of \u201cdisbelieving smile\u201d with her hand on her heart, posing excellently in the arms of an uncomfortable Ranil (who probably lost a few years of his life at this staged drama). And then the UNPers lose it. \u201cRanil, you are the Great Leader\u201d, \u201cyou are the savior\u201d \u201cyou are the uniter\u201d \u201cyou are the sacrificer\u201d \u201cyou are the heart- soul, liver- well not liver- of the UNP\u201d they wail now.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The UNPers are <i>already<\/i> missing Ranil.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Because they see Sajith with that skewed smile armed with all the fabricated \u201cqualifications\u201d with the <i>\u201caaryava<\/i>\u201d, mother and sister and they sense the horrendous, intellect diminishing road ahead.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Remember, Mahinda Rajapaksa, who left the Temple Trees in the early hours of post-Presidential elections in 2015? Remember how a large section of the nation took a collective sad breath in to their lungs and started feeling guilty for voting him out? How they all started missing their <i>Appachchi<\/i> already?<\/p>\n<p>At the recent UNP meeting to declare Sajith Premadasa the Presidential candidate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Ranil+Wickremesinghe\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Ranil Wickremesinghe<\/span><\/strong><\/a> delivered his speech in his style. One day we will miss this man. He asked the audience to \u201craise their hand if they agreed to Sajith Premadasa being the UNP nominee for the Presidential election. They did. With the cute authority of a Montessori teacher Ranil then he told them to put the hand down. Like babies they put their hands down. Then he asked them to raise their hand if they opposed\u201d. No one raised their hand.<\/p>\n<p>Except Ranil.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I think I saw him raising his hand high up.<\/p>\n<p>In his speech Ranil made some interesting statements.<\/p>\n<p>One was a narration on Ranil\u2019s difficult struggle to establish himself as the leader of a leader-annihilated UNP. This is a view that has been passionately articulated both by Colombo Telegraph editor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Uvindu+Kurukulasuriya\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Uvindu Kurukulasuriya<\/span><\/strong><\/a> on CT and other media, and, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Grusha+Andrews\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Grusha Andrews<\/span><\/strong><\/a> on CT.<\/p>\n<p>The second point Ranil raised was an important issue, also passionately raised by the above mentioned journalists on the sore lack of women politicians within the UNP. Ranil in a praise worthy attempt in his redemption speech mentioned that \u201ceven if some might become angry I must say, there are no female politicians among the second tier leadership of the UNP\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Well done Ranil.<\/p>\n<p>Finally.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Two decades too late, but finally.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There were some interesting women in the audience. Rosy Senanayake, the only organic woman politician and probably the only woman there who has risen in rank through her work. The other women were all just political ejaculates of their dead (or alive) fathers. Nothing much to write home about, but they were there: Chandrani Bandara (of Chandra Bandara), Hirunika Premachandra (of Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra), Chamindranee Kiriella (the \u2018wannabe politician\u2019 daughter of Lakshman Kiriella), Achini Lokubanda (of HM Lokubanda). Lihini Fernando was also seen somewhere.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Then Akila Viraj Kariyawasam delivered a ten point road map at this convention. He first lamented that the absence of a UNP president that resulted in a lost opportunity to \u201ctake political revenge even whilst having a UNP government\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Well done, Mr Party Secretary. Great vision. Go ahead and try to form a government so that you can take \u201cpolitical revenge\u201d How democratic. How heartwarming. (Read<i>: Good Lord<\/i>!).<\/p>\n<p>Akila Viraj Kariyawasam delivered his ten point road map to a UNP victory minutes after Ranil\u2019s speech referring to lack of women politicians within the UNP. But the road map did not contain a single affirmative word in favour of women in politics. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This speech was followed by more luckless, passionless politicians who spoke with dust in their mouth. One was Navin Dissanayake who, a few weeks ago was sniveling for a strange \u201cKandyan President\u201d. So Navin betrayed the UNP to roll at the feet of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Mahinda+Rajapaksa\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Mahinda Rajapaksa<\/span><\/strong><\/a> of the down south <i>Giruwapattuwa <\/i>like a pup because he wanted a \u201c<i>Kandyan\u201d<\/i> President? Looks like Navin has conveniently forgotten his mommy, once the Presidential candidate of the UNP, who originated from Matara. He then inauspiciously compared 52 year old Sajith to Gamini Dissanayake<i> \u201cdead at the age of 52\u201d.<\/i> The fate of some pregnant elephants probably just changed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Then came Ravi Karunanayake who was demanding to see Sajith Premadasa\u2019s GCE O\/L certificate just a month ago. Less said about that cringe worthy, sorry speech, the better.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At the end of the drama called \u201cHema Premadasa\u2019s peacock walk with hand on her bosom\u201d, all the coalition party leaders and some well-wishers who have been pre-invited got on stage to congratulate and make a display of support for Sajith Premadasa.<\/p>\n<p>Not a single woman was invited on stage.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What a party.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>No women.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>None.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The story of the other parties is not so sunny either. The JVP seem to be making a genuine effort to feature at least two female speakers in their rallies. However even the JVP appears to be recycling two or three faces across geography at their meetings. Even at JVP\u2019s heartwarming meeting in Jaffna no local woman politician spoke. Hang in there and do better, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Anura+Kumara+Dissanayake\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Anura<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, you are doing better than Ranil and Mahinda in standing up for women in politics.<\/p>\n<p>As for the <i>Pohottuwa,<\/i> well, there is Shirtanthi <i>Amma <\/i>(Read: Good Lord, save us from this Jayalalithaa moment) who is not really a politician. Not yet.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There was, once upon a time one woman, who fulfills the only criterion required to make it in Rajapaksa \u2013 <i>Pohottu <\/i>politics: being a Rajapaksa. That was Nirupama Rajapaksa. Even Nirupama Rajapaksa is nowhere to be seen now. <i>Pohottuwa<\/i> is in its crude male base.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So this is our banana republic. Where people are the comics that their leaders are. Emotional, Facebook affected. They forget the dead, the killed, the maimed, the stolen wealth, the Bond Scams, the works.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Throw a preening ex-first lady on stage for Ranil to awkwardly hold hands with and they weep.<\/p>\n<p>What a UNP.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What a bunch of politicians.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What a country.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s agree, no body throws an exclusive Boys Party like the UNP. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":490,"featured_media":205263,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2186,46,8,2375],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-205262","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-featured-news","category-constitutional-reforms","category-editorial","category-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 -
