The tenor of one was gossipy. The other was condemnatory of all who chose to live and work beyond our shores but decided to return when pestilence threatened them.<\/p>\n<p>Death at our doorstep should have diminished us.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>That it sparked excitement appalled me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The French philosopher novelist Albert Camus wrote his famous novel \u2018<i>La peste- The Plague\u2019<\/i> precisely to explain how catastrophe and contagion impacts the human condition.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At the time he wrote \u2018The<i> Plague\u2019 <\/i>, he was the editor in chief of\u00a0<i>Combat<\/i>, the underground magazine of the French Resistance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>His contributors included Andr\u00e9 Malraux, Jean-Paul Sartre and Raymond Aron.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Living under Nazi terror he wanted to filter and surface the link between physical and psychological infection. He writes \u201cThey were humanists: they disbelieved in pestilences \u201cWe saw ourselves when we set up a task force to combat the pandemic and got ready for an election how easy it is to mistake a pandemic for an annoyance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This Saturday and Sunday were filled with intoxicating anxiety. At 8 pm on Saturday, we learnt of the first death from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=COVID-19\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">COVID-19<\/span><\/a> at the IDH at Angoda. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It was a sixty-year male. The official announcement stressed that the man had other complications. I thought it was bloody funny. The man was dead because of the virus. Is it suggested that the virus got brave because of other complications?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>E.H. Carr, in his meaning of history gives an example of why added explanations don\u2019t do any good to the truth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>A man on his way to buy a pack of cigarettes is run over by a motorist.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The motorist applies brakes that did not function. The brakes did not function because the mechanic who attended to the faulty brakes had been negligent. What would history record as the cause of his death?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>That he was run over by a motorist? That he died on the road because he ran out of cigarettes? That he died because a mechanic was negligent?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Albet-Camus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-208999\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Albet-Camus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Albet-Camus.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Albet-Camus-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Albet-Camus-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The rest of the weekend in lockdown land I meditated on the bizarre and the bold approaches of how we approach the pandemic.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I may be wrong. But this is how I read it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The need of the hour is for solidarity and social distancing. That is not a problem for a nation that thrives on contradictions. We abhor murder and we pardon murderers. We don\u2019t care if the murder was<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>on a luxury Highrise or in a war ravaged jungle.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s imperative is to halt the pandemic and to hold elections to elect a new<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>parliament.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the last day of 2019, 31<sup>st<\/sup> December the Chinese state informed the World Health Organization that they had discovered a strange pneumonia vibrant in the city of Wuhan in the province of Hubei\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Since then this insidious angel of death, destruction and confusion has been named as the Covid-19 pandemic.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Thousands have died in China, Italy and elsewhere.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s death at Angoda is our first encounter with death by pandemic. The wicked angel of death is at our doorstep.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The stoic amongst us in this age of human rights and presidential pardons say that death is a kind of birth right of every person born. A curiously clever construction of an obvious truth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Whatever other complications the man had, he died alone at 8 pm at the Infectious Disease Hospital at Angoda.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He died alone while a bewildered nation stood vigil. He did not have the embrace of loved ones.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>His death came in a strange sanitized worlds where the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>living hovered around him dressed in the style of astronauts wearing<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>protective masks, gloves and visors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>His death was in a germ-free cocoon.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I am sure the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>doctor who attended would have looked at him kindly with forlorn eyes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The dying man would not have seen the resigned humanity in the doctor\u2019s eyes. He was wearing visors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Am I seeking melodrama? No.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I am simply and surely disgusted with the visors of political expediency that I have seen in the past two months.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s death at Angoda brought the brutal reality of the pandemic to Sri Lanka. A hard fact that needs lot of rubbing into those closed minds convinced of an imagined cosmic immunity that makes our island special. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s death at Angoda had no purpose, no logic, no necessity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hours before that death, a soldier convicted of murder was pardoned. The pardon had a logic and a purpose. But was there an urgent necessity?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The events in lockdown land during the week end<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>reminds us of the words of August Compete the man<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>regarded as the first philosopher of the sciences<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201c<\/b><b>Humanity is always made up of more dead than living.\u201d <\/b><b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b> <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><b>Back to normalcy \u2013 When? How?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Until a vaccine is found, the world can only slow down the spread. That too at considerable cost and with extreme measures. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>By remarkable<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>coincidence , Emeritus professor of history and history of medicine at Yale ,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Frank M Snowden<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>has published a great<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>book &#8211; \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Epidemics-Society-Black-Death-Present\/dp\/0300192215?ots=1&amp;slotNum=0&amp;imprToken=54b8921d-0ae1-03f8-bbf&amp;tag=thneyo0f-20\">Epidemics and Society: From the Black Death to the Present<\/a>\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Under normal circumstances I would have pestered my daughter to send it to me as she happens to live in country where bookstores keep knowledge unlike ours where they stock what sells. The lockdown<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>prevents any early access.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The \u2018New Yorker\u2019 carries some excellent excerpts.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cEpidemic diseases are not random events that afflict societies capriciously and without warning,\u201d <\/b>writes Professor Snowden.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><b>\u201cOn the contrary, every society produces its own specific vulnerabilities. To study them is to understand that society\u2019s structure, its standard of living, and its political priorities.\u201d<\/b><b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>We must ask ourselves in our collective lockdown mood \u201chave we not produced our own specific vulnerabilities in the wake of this pandemic? \u201c<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When will life return to normal? If you think \u2018life as usual\u2019 will come back, you are in over optimistic fantasy. In cloud cuckoo land.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That thought occurred to me when reading a Sunday Broadsheets online. It speculated that parliamentary elections may be held by the end of May.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Every country in the world wants to flatten the curve. There are people who seriously hold the view that we could do it faster than some others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>They are wrong. We may flatten the curve, but we will not negotiate the bend and restore normalcy. Normalcy comes when everybody succeeds in flattening their respective curves.<\/p>\n<p>During this bleak weekend, I seriously wondered about our ruling class and the knowledge-based economy on which they often pontificate.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is highly unlikely that any of the now defunct 225 or the current composition of the caretaker government has read the three books that sum up the rhythm of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century universe.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>They are Thomas Friedman\u2019s \u2018World is flat\u2019, Yuval Noah Hariri\u2019s \u2018Sapiens\u2019, and Mervyn Kings \u2018The End of Alchemy\u2019<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In \u2018The world is flat\u2019 the author New York Times columnist Friedman explains the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century connectivity of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>global trade and human enterprise.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In \u2018Sapiens\u2019 the Professor of History of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Yuval Hariri lucidly explains in ingeniously abridged form the \u2018history of the humankind\u2019. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In \u2018The End of Alchemy\u2019 Professor Mervyn King \u2013 the former governor of the Bank of England, considered the \u2018mother of all banks\u2019 explains the idea of paper money &#8211; humanities greatest invention.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Flattening the COVID -19 curve does not mean that we will go back to normal. We all want things to go back to normal.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>What we don\u2019t realize is that we will not go back to normal in a few weeks or a few months. If a vaccine is not found within a reasonable time frame, somethings never will go back to normal. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A successful city state Singapore , and a resourceful siege state Israel<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>have provided good indicators of where the world is headed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Israel is in the process of using cell phone locating data used to track terrorists to identify carriers of the virus. Singapore has made exhaustive contact tracing in to a routine procedure.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Globalization began when mariners mastered the winds. The globalization that we speak of is the vibrant international marketplace brought about by technology driven connectivity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Manufacturers world over built flexible supply chains. Profits peaked because substituting one supplier or component became easy across borders, oceans and continents.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Adam Smith\u2019s\u00a0\u2018Wealth of Nations\u2019 became a tome on a library shelf. \u2018Wealth of the World\u2019 can now be read on giant stock market screens in New York, London, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Seoul and Singapore.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The evidence of globalized division of labor can be seen by the number of BPOs located in Colombo when you head towards the New Kelani bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Specialization produced greater efficiency, which in turn led to growth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The functioning growth circle is now intercepted by the pandemic virus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It has ruptured a complex system of interdependence.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Huge enterprises dependent on global supply chain were cozily settled in tangled webs of production networks. Complex as they were, corrupt and conniving as they were, the system held the world economy together.<\/p>\n<p>A component of a given product could now be made in several countries.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the wake of the pandemic companies in Palo alto, Stuttgart, Seoul and Nagoya have realized that this cultivated specialization, substitution<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>is difficult. Especially the unusual skills of the Chinese cannot be replicated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When production went global it necessarily made countries interdependent. No country can claim self-sufficiency in all the goods, components, services and raw material it needed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The<b>\u00a0<\/b>COVID-19 pandemic has devastatingly exposed the fragility of this globalized system.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In coming months, we will see who can confront the crisis and to what degree. We will then know who in which country followed Apple CEO Tim Cooks dictum that inventory is \u201cfundamentally evil\u201d and adopted \u201cjust-in-time\u201d supply chains as unimpeachable doctrine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The pandemic has already reduced global production of laptop by 50%. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The New York based ABI research is blunt in its prognosis.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic has produced a chain of events unlike anything we have seen in our lifetimes. Our daily routines have been flooded with uncertainty, both at home and at work. This has resulted in questions about the future state of our global economy. \u201c<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The phrase \u2018Breaking News\u2019 has lost its meaning. Only the oligarchs who own private TV channels think that broken news is breaking news.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I dedicate this essay to the girl in exile.
