{"id":210107,"date":"2020-05-02T03:34:03","date_gmt":"2020-05-01T22:04:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=210107"},"modified":"2020-05-03T00:14:49","modified_gmt":"2020-05-02T18:44:49","slug":"gotas-sinhala-only-lawyers-mount-offensive-to-keep-attorney-hejaaz-hizbullah-in-illegal-detention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/gotas-sinhala-only-lawyers-mount-offensive-to-keep-attorney-hejaaz-hizbullah-in-illegal-detention\/","title":{"rendered":"Gota\u2019s \u2018Sinhala-Only\u2019 Lawyers Mount Offensive To Keep Attorney Hejaaz Hizbullah In Illegal Detention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Gotabaya+Rajapaksa\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Gotabaya Rajapaksa<\/span><\/a>\u2019s counter offensive against calls from lawyers for the BASL to intervene in the illegal arrest and detention of attorney at law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Hejaaz+Hizbullah\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Hejaaz Hizbullah<\/span><\/a> has resulted in a 14 page letter signed by 216 lawyers loyal to the Government.<\/p>\n<p>All of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Gota\u2019s-\u2018Sinhala-Only\u2019-Lawyers-Mount-Offensive-To-Keep-Attorney-Hejaaz-Hizbullah-In-Illegal-Detention.pd\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">signatories are Sinhalese lawyers led by President\u2019s Counsel Manohara Silva<\/span><\/a>, whose recent interventions in court on all matters relating to the constitution and fundamental rights have been rejected outright by the country\u2019s highest courts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_210108\" style=\"width: 842px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Manohara-Silva.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-210108\" class=\" wp-image-210108\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Manohara-Silva.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"832\" height=\"662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Manohara-Silva.jpg 608w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Manohara-Silva-300x239.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 832px) 100vw, 832px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-210108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President\u2019s Counsel Manohara Silva<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The letter from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa\u2019s lawyers urge the BASL not to intervene in Hizbullah\u2019s arrest saying that the arrest was a result of matters completely outside his scope of work as an attorney. The letter also alleges that Hizbullah was connected to the 21 April 2019 Easter Sunday bombings even though not a shred of evidence in this regard has been put forward by police to any court.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, in violation of all due process, the arrested attorney is yet to be produced before a magistrate and there is no judicial oversight of his ongoing detention at the CID.
