{"id":214206,"date":"2020-10-28T17:52:55","date_gmt":"2020-10-28T12:22:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=214206"},"modified":"2020-10-28T22:23:22","modified_gmt":"2020-10-28T16:53:22","slug":"academics-call-for-corporate-and-state-responsibility-on-managing-covid-19-in-sri-lanka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/academics-call-for-corporate-and-state-responsibility-on-managing-covid-19-in-sri-lanka\/","title":{"rendered":"Academics Call For Corporate And State Responsibility On Managing Covid-19 In Sri Lanka"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;As the number of\u00a0COVID-19 cases increases, it is vital that both corporate and state entities prioritize the health\u00a0and safety of workers, to prevent further outbreaks as happened at the Brandix factory,&#8221;\u00a055 Sri Lankan academics around the world have said today. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Curfew-Covid-19-Sri-Lanka-.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-209062\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Curfew-Covid-19-Sri-Lanka-.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Curfew-Covid-19-Sri-Lanka-.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Curfew-Covid-19-Sri-Lanka--300x163.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Curfew-Covid-19-Sri-Lanka--768x418.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We publish below the statement in full:<\/p>\n<p>We the undersigned academics who work on Sri Lanka are disturbed by the lack of\u00a0transparency and accountability by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Brandix\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Brandix<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=SriLankan+Airlines\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">SriLankan Airlines<\/span><\/a> in the context of the threat\u00a0posed to the country by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=COVID-19\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">COVID-19<\/span><\/a>. These corporations have not shared with relevant state\u00a0bodies information essential for managing COVID-19, including the original flight rosters about\u00a0workers flown into Sri Lanka. As a result, a number of workers have been blamed and maligned\u00a0as super-spreaders, with questionable treatment around their confinement. Treatment of\u00a0workers in this way negates these companies\u2019 duty to be transparent and claim to be\u00a0responsible toward workers.<\/p>\n<p>We are also concerned about reports that workers are being treated inhumanely by the\u00a0authorities responsible for quarantining suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19. We stand\u00a0in solidarity with workers and their advocates in calling for a more humane treatment in public\u00a0health responses. While acknowledging the exemplary efforts of the front-line medical teams\u00a0attending to CoVID-19, we urge the state and the media to adopt a compassionate &#8211; rather than\u00a0punitive &#8211; approach towards people that have been tested positively. These patients need the\u00a0best possible physical and mental care and not the counter-productive stigma attached to the\u00a0infection.<\/p>\n<p>Citizens of Sri Lanka, including workers, require these corporations and country-level COVID-19\u00a0response teams to be held accountable in order to ensure that they, as the public, are absolved\u00a0from the on-going shifting of blame onto workers. As importantly &#8211; during the time of a global\u00a0pandemic \u2013 the information withheld by Brandix and Sri Lankan Airlines is critical for the Public\u00a0Health authorities to discharge their duties with integrity and professionalism.
