{"id":215256,"date":"2020-12-10T17:59:15","date_gmt":"2020-12-10T12:29:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=215256"},"modified":"2020-12-10T23:16:31","modified_gmt":"2020-12-10T17:46:31","slug":"interim-report-by-ali-sabrys-committee-justifies-mahara-prisoners-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/interim-report-by-ali-sabrys-committee-justifies-mahara-prisoners-protest\/","title":{"rendered":"Interim Report By Ali Sabry&#8217;s Committee Justifies Mahara Prisoners&#8217; Protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The interim report of the five-member committee appointed to inquire into the Mahara Prison unrest last week has found that the protests by the inmates inside the prison walls was justified, Colombo Telegraph exclusively learns.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Kusala-Sarojini-Weerawardena.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-215257\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Kusala-Sarojini-Weerawardena.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Kusala-Sarojini-Weerawardena.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Kusala-Sarojini-Weerawardena-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Kusala-Sarojini-Weerawardena-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eleven prisoners died in the shooting inside the prison and over a hundred inmates were injured in the deadly attempt by Government troops to stop the unrest.<\/p>\n<p>In its observations, the Committee chaired by Retired High Court Judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena noted that the protest by the inmates were justified because the prisoners had just learned on November 30, 2020 that there had been a massive corona virus outbreak inside the Mahara prison. The Committee noted that prisoners had grown concern for their safety because of the overcrowded conditions and a fever that was spreading rapidly throughout the prison.
