From his name, you will immediately guess, unlike my regular drinking partner Sivapuranam Thevaram, the Tamil fellow, Pol is of Sinhala ethnicity. For the story today, this is irrelevant. Though the meaning of the word <i>pol<\/i> (\u0db4\u0ddc\u0dbd\u0dca) in Sinhala being coconut has some significance.<\/p>\n<p>What matters is, Pol is a highly successful Sri Lankan, naturalized as British. An educational culture during his youth in Sri Lanka has stretched Pol\u2019s mind to excellent standards of curiosity and knowledge. Here in Bridgetown, Pol has shone in scholarship, reaching fantastic heights. He is not alone. There are several successful Sri Lankans, who shop in Waitrose, admire Her Majesty the Queen and voted Brexit. There is a <i>pol<\/i> in many of them.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the UK is the fifth largest economy in the world, inheriting much of its wealth from the Empire it once ruled and thanks to the technological advances of the Industrial Revolution. But the attack by the virus on such a powerful nation has been devastating. Deaths per million population is highest in the world, and, apart from the vaccine rollout which is working very well because it has been left to the professionals to carry out, every other aspect of handling the pandemic has been to line the pockets of friends of those in power by signing lucrative contracts <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2021\/feb\/19\/matt-hancock-acted-unlawfully-failing-publish-covid-contracts-high-court\">with no due process<\/a><\/span>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yet Pol admires Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson as a competent leader and would vote for him again.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, poverty has risen at an alarming rate. Children, over a million of them, live under the poverty line and are <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenssociety.org.uk\/what-we-do\/our-work\/ending-child-poverty\">entitled to free school meals<\/a><\/span>. During school holiday they do not get enough to eat and a children\u2019s charity has called for a reduction in the school holidays from six weeks to four, so the children may go hungry less. I could read <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oliver_Twist\">Oliver Twist<\/a><\/span> again and be forgiven for mistaking it to describe the present times. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And yet Pol admires Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson as a competent leader and would vote for him again.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the brutal murder of George Floyd in the United States, there is much talk about racism, institutional racism and the notion of Equality, Diversity and Inclusiveness (EDI). If 20 years ago, the Metropolitan Police was found to be institutionally racist by the <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2019\/feb\/22\/macpherson-report-what-was-it-and-what-impact-did-it-have\">Macpherson inquiry<\/a><\/span>, last year, British universities have been declared the same by the <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2020\/nov\/24\/uk-universities-perpetuate-institutional-racism-report-says\">Equalities Commission<\/a><\/span>. They ignore what is structural \u2013 i.e. the reinforced glass ceilings that keep the \u201cother\u201d out of high office &#8212; and focus mostly on behaviour, i.e. the use of foul language, the N-word, the P-word etc. In this area, too, the track record of the Prime Minister is not great. He has been careless in his description of <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-45083275\">Muslim women<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/boris-johnson-conservative-leadership-latest-racism-watermelon-smiles-satirical-a8981166.html\">Africans<\/a><\/span>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Still, Pol is oblivious to Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson\u2019s shortcomings and would vote for him again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat drives Pol?\u201d I asked Thevarm when we met for a drink over zoom, with our own bottles of <i>Peroni<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPol\u2019s acceptance of and admiration for Johnson, <i>machan<\/i> (buddy),\u201d Thevaram said after a minute\u2019s pause, \u201cis simply a reflection of his own thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPol has views similar to Johnson. He thinks people are poor because they are benefit scroungers, children go hungry because the parents are lazy to feed them and he himself wants to describe Muslim women and Africans in the same language Johnson has used.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut in the educated professional circles he moves in, he cannot say the things he wishes to say, and suppresses his inner thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo his vote for the Prime Minister is simply placing himself in the imagined world of Johnson and pretending to articulate those views that he cannot in his normal world do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could sense this was heading in the direction of Sigmund Freud\u2019s line of psychoanalysis, not a particularly healthy one for our drinking session.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Perhaps sensing this, Thevaram referred to a Tamil literary figure to make his point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember the good old days, <i>machan<\/i>, the evenings we used to spend at the Jaffna Public Library and the <i>Pannai <\/i>bridge?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have actually discussed Pol\u2019s psyche there!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How can I forget those days? In late Seventies, we were in secondary school at Jaffna Hindu College. After classes in the afternoon, we would cycle down to the library to spend a couple of hours reading. We would then walk along the <i>Pannai<\/i> causeway chatting about various things: mathematics, politics, philosophy and literature. No topic was off limits. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This was possible because the library had not been burnt yet.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Jaffna-library_causeway.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-216912\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Jaffna-library_causeway.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Jaffna-library_causeway.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Jaffna-library_causeway-300x123.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Jaffna-library_causeway-768x316.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Among our favourite authors of the time was the Tamil novelist D. Jeyakanthan. His short stories were immensely powerful, brilliantly subtle and probed deep into sociological issues of the Tamil society. Though based in South India, much of Jeyakanthan\u2019s writings had wider resonance. Critics of the time thought, and I largely agree, that DJ was good with the lower strata of society but somewhat wide of the mark when dealing with the middle class.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I have not read Tamil authors of such standing since those days. Among contemporary writers, <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antonythasan_Jesuthasan\">A. Jesuthasn<\/a><\/span> (writing under the pen name <i>Shoba Sakthi<\/i>) is impressive. His early work <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/6404181\/Gorilla-Shoba-Sakthi\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><i>Gorilla<\/i><\/span>,<\/a> on a Sri Lankan Tamil child soldier, centred around his own childhood experience is a gripping read. The language is rough, but draws the reader into the context of family struggles, atrocities by security forces, life in the rebel group and his wake up call to slip away at early signs of fascism in it. A smaller piece I enjoyed much is a hilarious short story \u0b95\u0ba3\u0bcd\u0b9f\u0bbf \u0bb5\u0bc0\u0bb0\u0ba9\u0bcd (<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shobasakthi.com\/shobasakthi\/2014\/10\/03\/%25E0%25AE%2595%25E0%25AE%25A3%25E0%25AF%258D%25E0%25AE%259F%25E0%25AE%25BF-%25E0%25AE%25B5%25E0%25AF%2580%25E0%25AE%25B0%25E0%25AE%25A9%25E0%25AF%258D\/\"><i>Kandy Veeran<\/i><\/a><\/span><i>)<\/i>, which mocks Tamil rebel groups, their incompetence<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and internecine rivalries. The writing is beautifully creative and shows the rebels no mercy. Shoba is also a successful actor, and one of his films <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/the-story-of-the-occasional-cinemagoer\/\"><i>Deepan<\/i> features here<\/a><\/span>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Returning to Jeyakanthan,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thevaram asked me to recall a particular short story we had discussed in detail from the <i>Pannai <\/i>causeway. It was based in Madras in South India \u2013 now Chennai &#8212; about a manual labourer and his wife, living a hand-to-mouth life of daily work and food. They were addicted to cinema. As a source of entertainment, stress relief and make-belief, cinema dominated the lives of people. Hero actors were idols of worship, and Gods were losing out in competition.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Coconut-mgr_bojo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-216914\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Coconut-mgr_bojo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Coconut-mgr_bojo.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Coconut-mgr_bojo-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Coconut-mgr_bojo-768x452.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The man and his wife were fans of the actor M.G.Ramachandran (MGR for short, also referred to as <i>vaaththiyaar<\/i> by fans). The couple had seen every one of MGR\u2019s films multiple times. Earnings from the day\u2019s labour is carefully managed on food and cinema tickets. On some days of low earnings, cinema ticket got priority over food.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Their relationship as husband and wife is at the heart of Jeyakanthan\u2019s story. Over time, the man observed declining interest from his wife towards sexual activity. This was not a consistent decline, for then he might have attributed it to physical exertion of manual labour.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There were nights she would respond to his advances with immense passion and energy, and their love making was sensual and memorable. But then there were other nights when she would simply push him away, faking a headache.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The volatility in her behaviour puzzled him.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In frustration, the labourer decided to do a controlled experiment. He would systematically note all events and actions of the days in which pleasure was achieved and contrast them with the days in which he was rejected. Every single detail of his actions, from wishing her well in the morning to the hoppers they had for dinner, were meticulously noted in his lab book. One by one, he eliminated each one of the hypotheses as the discriminating aspect of reward and rejection. And then he had his Eureka moment!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It was the T-shirts he owned featuring <i>vaaththiyaar<\/i>, posing in great hero style. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The night he realized it, he collected his T-shirts with <i>vaaththiyaar<\/i>\u2019s picture on them, lit a fire and burnt them all, saying<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>Vaaththiyaar<\/i>, to everyone in the whole world, you are a hero.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly to me, you have become the villain!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes that not explain Pol\u2019s vote <i>machan<\/i>?\u201d Thevaam asked, \u201cto situate oneself in that imagined setting that is either not allowed or not accessible, and modulate your behaviour accordingly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was clear Pol\u2019s vote for Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson at the next election is assured!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCheers,\u201d I said to Thevaram.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":336,"featured_media":216914,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,46,8],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-216910","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-constitutional-reforms","category-editorial"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 -
