Nowhere is this more manifest than in the newspapers published by the <b>dominant<\/b> print media company in the country &#8211; <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Wijeya Newspapers Limited (WNL). <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Its \u2018Daily Mirror\u2019 by far the largest circulation English language daily is a prime example of projecting <\/span><span class=\"s2\">an alternate reality. Most likely this is true of WNL\u2019s Sinhala language newspapers as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">On five consecutive days (6,7,8,9,10 April), the \u2018Daily Mirror\u2019 had as its leading front page news story the controversy related to a beauty contest for the country\u2019s nominee for the Mrs. World title. <\/span><span class=\"s3\"> An example is the Daily Mirror\u2019 of 10 April 2021 where the front page lead stories are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/top_story\/Caroline-Jurie-slams-Mrs-Sri-Lanka-pageant\/155-209785\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Caroline Jurie slams Mrs. Sri Lanka pageant<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/print\/front_page\/Pushpika-submits-documents-of-marriage-to-World-pageant-as-she-readies-for-Mrs-World\/238-209743\"><span class=\"s5\">Pushpika submits documents of marriage to World pageant as she readies for Mrs. World<\/span><\/a><\/span> while the last item at the very <b>bottom<\/b> is the politically charged news item <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/print\/front_page\/SJB-MPs-allege-that-Speaker-is-acting-partially\/238-209758\"><span class=\"s5\">SJB MPs allege that Speaker is acting partially<\/span><\/a><\/span> in relation to <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Ranjan Ramanayake losing his parliamentary seat under controversial circumstances. Need I say more?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">As if this were not bad enough, a regular front page obsession of the \u2018Daily Mirror\u2019 is the reporting of the politically irrelevant doings and pronouncements of its owner <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Ranjit Wijewardene\u2019s<\/span> <span class=\"s3\">laid-back<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> son <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Ruwan Wijewardene. He is the deputy leader of the marginalized and increasingly irrelevant United National Party (UNP) led by Ranjit\u2019s nephew and Ruwan\u2019s first cousin &#8211; Ranil Wickremesinghe. The UNP which did not win a single seat at the 2020 August General Election, is even struggling to nominate a member for the only parliamentary seat it is entitled to on the national list. This is the first time the UNP has suffered such an ignominy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">Ranjit Wijewardene is also President of the influential Gangaramaya Dayaka Sabha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\"> \u2018Daily Mirror\u2019 <b>front page<\/b> \u2018coverage of Ruwan with pictures of him to boot include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/print\/front_page\/Ruwan-issues-green-proclamation-to-protect-environment\/238-209599\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Ruwan issues \u2019green proclamation\u2019 to protect environment<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s7\">(<\/span><span class=\"s6\">8 April 2021<\/span><span class=\"s7\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/print\/front_page\/Broad-opposition-alliance-led-by-UNP-need-of-the-hour-Ruwan\/238-209324\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Broad opposition alliance led by UNP, need of the hour: Ruwan<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s7\"> (<\/span><span class=\"s6\">5 April 2021) <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/print\/front_page\/UNP-to-appoint-National-List-MP-soon-Ruwan\/238-206769\">UNP to appoint National List MP soon: Ruwan<\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s7\">(<\/span><span class=\"s6\">1 March 2021) <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s8\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/breaking_news\/UNP-has-mature-leaders-who-can-lead-a-grand-alliance\/108-201609\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">UNP has mature leaders who can lead a grand alliance<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s7\"> (<\/span><span class=\"s6\">11 December 2020)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><span class=\"s1\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/print\/front_page\/We-will-travel-across-the-country-and-reorganise-the-partyRuwan\/238-200406\">We will travel across the country and reorganise the party: Ruwan<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s6\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"s7\">(<\/span><span class=\"s6\">23 November 2020)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s3\">Anyone reading the English language newspapers published by WNL <\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u2013 \u2018Sunday Times\u2019, \u2018Daily FT\u2019 and particularly<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> \u2018Daily Mirror\u2019 will conclude that the main opposition party &#8211; Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) led by opposition leader Sajith Premadasa is in deep slumber. This may well apply to WNL\u2019s Sinhala language newspapers \u2018Lankadeepa\u2019 (Daily &amp; Sunday Editions).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s3\">For the most part ignored are the forceful parliamentary and other speeches of Sajith Premadasa, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Manusha Nanayakkara, <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Harin Fernando and others. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><span class=\"s8\"><b><i>\u201cSon of the Mass Murderer\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">WNL bias in favour of its owner\u2019s nephew Wickremesinghe and son Ruwan (UNP Leader and Deputy Leader respectively) is such that \u2018Daily FT\u2019 &#8211; the country\u2019s only stand-alone\u00a0business publication on 12 April 2021 in an article titled <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.lk\/columns\/Is-Port-City-not-important\/4-716223\"><span class=\"s4\">Is Port City not important?<\/span><\/a><\/span> authored by \u2018Prince of Kandy\u2019 had the <b>audacity<\/b> to state as follows of SJB and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>\u201cWhat I do know is that the <\/i><b><i>son of the mass murderer<\/i><\/b><i> is unlikely to win an election and the sooner we all just get behind Ranil the better our chances of having someone competent redraft the Port City legislation.\u201d <\/i>(emphasis mine)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">True to form the \u2018Daily Mirror\u2019 on <\/span><span class=\"s3\">23 April 2021 had a front page news item <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/breaking_news\/Ranil-calls-for-new-Bill-to-regulate-Port-city\/108-210434\"><span class=\"s9\">Ranil calls for new Bill to regulate Port city<\/span><\/a><\/span> .<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">Things just do not add up. The question is why on earth Ranil is not in Parliament to <i>\u201credraft the Port City legislation.\u201d<\/i> by filling the solitary seat the UNP is entitled to on the National list?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">Wickremesinghe had no qualms in serving as a Cabinet Minister when Ranasinghe Premadasa was Prime Minister and serving as leader of the House under his Presidency. He also appointed Sajith as UNP Deputy Leader and nominated him as Presidential candidate.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">Wickremesinghe who was Prime Minister 4 times (depending on how the terms are calculated!) without ever completing the full term<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>had ample opportunity to put his purported <i>\u201ccompetence\u201d<\/i> to good use. The end result of his <i>\u201ccompetence\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>is such that the electorate has time and again given him a fitting response culminating in the UNP which he has \u2018led\u2019 for almost 27 years being decimated at the August 2020 General Election.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">Even <\/span><span class=\"s8\"><b>IF<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b> <\/b>former President Ranasinghe Premadasa was a \u201c<i>mass murderer\u201d, <\/i>in what manner is his son Sajith responsible? Would WNL\u2019s \u2018Daily FT\u2019 dare allege even half of what is alleged against Sajith against anyone in the SLPP leadership?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">Sajith is one of the rare political leaders in the post-1977 political history of Sri Lanka who is free of even a whiff of an allegation concerning any violence \u2013 no Batalanda, no nothing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">If Sajith and SJB ignore this affront, are they not conveying a message of weakness to the electorate? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s8\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><b>Media Accountability<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">It is downright dangerous to give the media both state\/private \u2013 a free pass to operate without <b>\u2018independent\u2019<\/b> regulation. It is a myth that the privately owned media is far superior to the state owned media. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">The businessmen owned mainstream media (Press\/Electronic) have the power to not only influence\/control politicians but also to influence good or bad values in society. The relationship between the media and the corporate sector is more complex. Advertising revenues and the threat of exposure of corruption complicate matters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s3\">There is evidence that the media both state\/private abuse this power with impunity. Due to WNL\u2019s <b>dominant<\/b> position within the private media, the focus of this article will be on WNL.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>WNL would appear to be a law unto itself in this country. There is documentary evidence of WNL publications \u2018planting\u2019 <b>non-existent<\/b> stories falsely attributed to even sources such as the <b>\u2018London Times\u2019<\/b>!<b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/b>At its own whim WNL decides when or not to grant a \u2018Right of Reply\u2019.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\">Shades of wrongdoing\/abuse exist in other media companies as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">The \u2018Sri Lanka Press Institute\u2019 (SLPI) and its farcical \u2018Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka\u2019 (PCCSL) formed under the initiative of WNL has had only two chairmen since inception in 2003. Ranjit Wijewardene was the inaugural chairman of both. The farce is such that WNL\u2019s \u2018Sunday Times\u2019 Editor &#8211; Sinha Ratnatunga is also the Deputy Chairman of the PCCSL.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In simple words, if a person has a problem with the \u2018Sunday Times\u2019 that person has to complain to Ratnatunga about Ratnatunga! These people are not even embarrassed by such \u2018conflict of interest\u2019.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What is really concerning is the extent to which systemic abuse is being tolerated by society. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">This writer invites WNL to refute any of this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">WNL has so completely intimidated all the other media in the country that when Ruwan Wijewardene was appointed Minister of Mass Media by his cousin PM Wickremesinghe giving him access to information and influence over the competitive media, there wasn\u2019t even a whimper\u00a0of protest from any quarter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s8\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><b>Antipathy to SJB<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s3\">\u2018Daily Mirror\u2019 antipathy to SJB is so obvious that it positioned its news story<b> <\/b><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/breaking_news\/Revelations-of-SJB-MPs-cause-uproar-in-Parliament\/108-210270\"><span class=\"s10\">Revelations of SJB MPs cause uproar in Parliament<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b> BELOW<\/b> <b> <\/b><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/breaking_news\/MP-Diana-proposes-to-extend-opening-hours-of-bars-liquor-outlets\/108-210267\"><span class=\"s5\">MP Diana proposes to extend opening hours of bars, liquor outlets<\/span><\/a><\/span> on its front page on 21 April. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">Readers can decide for themselves whether the \u2018Daily Mirror\u2019 print version had <b>reduced<\/b> the <b>font size <\/b>and readability of Dayan Jayatilleka\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/opinion\/Right-of-reply-IN-DEFENcE-OF-THE-SJB\/172-210277\"><span class=\"s4\">Right of reply: IN DEFENCE OF THE SJB<\/span><\/a><\/span> published on 21 April 2021 in<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">relation to Krishantha Cooray\u2019s article<\/span><span class=\"s12\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> <a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/opinion\/SJB-Fast-asleep-or-a-sleeping-giant\/172-210114\"><span class=\"s4\">SJB: Fast asleep or a sleeping giant?<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s2\"> published on 19 April 2021? Readers can also determine whether in its <b>online<\/b> version, \u2018Daily Mirror\u2019 has given undue prominence to Cooray\u2019s article when publishing Jayatilleka\u2019s<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/opinion\/Right-of-reply-IN-DEFENcE-OF-THE-SJB\/172-210277\"><span class=\"s4\">rebuttal<\/span><\/a><\/span> thus compromising any semblance of impartiality. If this is the case, does not such blatant abuse alone demand an <b>independent regulator<\/b> for the media \u2013 print and electronic? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">The rest of the media are so overawed with the power of WNL that despite Ruwan Wijewardene being the State Minister of Defence in the run-up to and during the Easter Sunday attack itself &#8211; no politician, media organization, religious clergy or even the vociferous Cardinal<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>are demanding at least some accountability for Ruwan\u2019s share of responsibility for the carnage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s3\">WNL appears to be supremely confident that its \u2018double games\u2019 will be overlooked whenever a UNP led alliance led by Wickremesinghe is in government. This game plan of WNL has now been complicated by the SJB marginalizing the UNP and with it the dreams Ranjit Wijewardene has for his laid-back<\/span> <span class=\"s3\">son Ruwan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s8\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><b>Wickremesinghe<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p13\"><span class=\"s2\">Given the nature of Sri Lanka\u2019s electorate, call it what you may \u2013 immature\/gullible or anything else, it has a very short attention span. How else could one interpret the results of the 2015 August and 2020 August General Elections? Despite Wickremesinghe being the main cause for the electoral drubbing of the UNP at the August 2020 General Election, it will be foolhardy for the SJB to underestimate the damage Wickremesinghe could do to the electoral prospects of the SJB. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s3\">The SJB must recognize the short attention span of the electorate and the <b>misplaced<\/b> belief among a section of the electorate that Wickremesinghe stands out as a competent person. This is notwithstanding examples to the <b>contrary <\/b>such as the egregious Bond scam under his watch, insisting on having Arjuna Mahendran a foreign national as CBSL Governor and a plethora of shocking mismanagement which include placing the National Lotteries Board under the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Foreign<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> Ministry and friends\/associates with questionable track records in key positions. This is akin to the proverb <i>\u2018in the land of the blind, the one-eyed\u00a0man is\u00a0king\u2019<\/i>! Several factors including media support from the country\u2019s dominant print media company WNL which publishes the country\u2019s largest circulation \u2018Lankadeepa\u2019 (Daily\/Sunday Editions) and possibly some help from other powerful quarters gives Wickremesinghe sufficient clout to be a spoiler for the SJB. How else could one interpret the extensive security given to Wickremesinghe whenever he is out of office \u2013 particularly at present when politically he is a veritable cipher?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p13\"><span class=\"s2\">Just the other day on 27 April 2021 \u2018Daily Mirror\u2019 had a full page <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/opinion\/Concerns-were-raised-Colombo-Port-will-be-monitored-using-Port-City-Ranil-Wickremesinghe\/172-210651\"><span class=\"s4\">Q&amp;A Interview<\/span><\/a><\/span> with<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Wickremesinghe. I wonder whether they have ever done so with Sajith in the past or recently?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p13\"><span class=\"s8\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">The SJB has the <b>potential<\/b> to upset this belief by giving leadership to a credible movement in which the electorate could have confidence. At least in the foreseeable future, it is unlikely that the SJB could do it alone. To cut a long story short, the SJB must team up with <\/span><span class=\"s13\">Anura Kumara Dissanayake\u2019s JVP and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>appropriate minority parties. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">It will be strategically<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>beneficial to have <\/span><span class=\"s13\">Dissanayake as Deputy<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sajith <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Premadasa in a coalition. The question is whether Premadasa is strong enough to resist spoilers within his own SJB?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">The SJB must not be under the delusion that its impressive parliamentary speeches however sensational will carry them over the line.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The SLPP even if somewhat weakened compared to what it was in November 2019, is still very much a powerful political force.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It will take some doing to prise a substantial portion of the Sinhala-Buddhist vote from its clutches. This is clearly demonstrated in the manner in which the newly formed SLPP bounced back after January 2015. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">It is crucial that SJB puts its own \u2018house\u2019 in order. What is the electorate to make of its national organizer\u2019s daughter being appointed to a diplomatic post in Australia by the incumbent government it hopes to succeed? Previously on the eve of the January 2015 Presidential election, did not this very same SJB national organizer exit the UNP under controversial circumstances and support the candidature of Mahinda Rajapaksa? What does he really bring to the SJB table?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">Sajith\u2019s biggest weakness would appear to be his lack of political resolve which was amply demonstrated in his tolerating Wickremesinghe\u2019s disastrous leadership of the UNP for so long, silence in the wake of the egregious bond scam and other issues. If this hangover continues to prevail, it will play straight into the hands of his powerful opponents. One cannot overestimate the need for Sajith to be <b>strong<\/b> in the face of spoilers which include those from his SJB.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">One wonders whether the SJB has what it takes to take-on the SLPP juggernaut (even if currently weakened) if it cannot even stand up to the antics of the mainstream media led by WNL?
