{"id":2233,"date":"2011-11-30T00:53:02","date_gmt":"2011-11-30T00:53:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/colombotelegraph.com\/?p=2233"},"modified":"2011-11-30T00:53:02","modified_gmt":"2011-11-30T00:53:02","slug":"1st-death-anniversary-a-courageous-journalist-sivanayagam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/1st-death-anniversary-a-courageous-journalist-sivanayagam\/","title":{"rendered":"1ST DEATH ANNIVERSARY: A Courageous Journalist Sivanayagam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0Tamil Centre for Human Rights &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>It was a year ago today, 29<sup>th<\/sup> November 2011 that Mr Subramaniam Sivanayagam known fondly to the diaspora as <strong><em>\u201cIyah\u201d,<\/em><\/strong> editor of <strong><em>\u201cSaturday Review\u201d,<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>\u201cTamil Nation\u201d<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>\u201cHot Spring\u201d<\/em><\/strong> passed away.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2234\" style=\"width: 197px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/subramaniam-sivanayagam-colombo-telegraph.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2234\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2234\" title=\"Subramaniam Sivanayagam - colombo telegraph\" src=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/subramaniam-sivanayagam-colombo-telegraph.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2234\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cIt was very hard for all of us. It&#039;s still very hard. The anniversary of his death just passed, and every single one of his family members and friends, still, after all these years... it&#039;s unbelievable&quot;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr Sivanayagam worked for the <strong><em>\u2018Ceylon Daily News\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, the <strong><em>\u2018Daily Mirror\u2019,<\/em><\/strong> J. Walter Thompson and the Ceylon Tourist Board. In 1981 he worked as the founder editor of the <strong><em>\u201cSaturday Review\u201d<\/em><\/strong>, a newspaper started by Tamil intellectuals, the first Jaffna English newspaper. As the \u2018Saturday Review\u2019 was banned by the government and they troubled Mr. Sivanayagam, he went to India and worked there for the \u201cTamil Information Centre\u201d for a few years. Then along with his friends, he started an English fortnightly newspaper, <strong><em>\u201cTamil Nation\u201d.<\/em><\/strong> While he was working for Tamil Nation, he was arrested by the Indian authorities under TADA and detained for a few years in India.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as he was released from prison, he came to France, sought political asylum and lived in Paris for some years. While in Paris, he started publishing the monthly magazine <strong><em>\u201cHot Spring\u201d.<\/em><\/strong> During his stay there, he had a heart attack and underwent an operation. As he was also suffering from diabetes, his friends in the United Kingdom encouraged him to move to London, where he could live closer to them and some of his relatives as well. In London, he continued to publish the popular \u201cHot Spring\u201d magazine.<\/p>\n<p>In London, UK he published two books, <strong><em>\u201cPen and the Gun\u201d &amp; \u201cSri Lanka \u2013 Witness to History\u201d \u2013 A journalist\u2019s Memoirs 1930 \u2013 200) <\/em><\/strong>which contain his popular articles and writings, expressing his experiences as a journalist and the effects of politics in Sri Lanka. Also in 1987 he published <strong><em>\u201cSri Lanka : 10 years of Jayewardene Rule\u201d.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As his illness got worse, he decided to live with his family and moved to Colombo in 2005.
