An objective assessment of his work requires evaluating his framework in Enabling Traditions (2005), which argues that heritage is not a stagnant, regressive obstacle to modernization, but a dynamic, generative tool for indigenous identity and intellectual autonomy. When extended to his critiques of Indian and Sri Lankan cinema, this thesis provides a compelling methodology for reading films as active cultural texts. However, from the perspective of cultural anthropology, Dissanayake’s non-anthropological background reveals an enduring tension: his text-based model of “enabling traditions” frequently clashes with the complex, lived realities of vernacular folk life.

Screenshot

De-Westernizing Visual Culture through Epic Narratives

Dissanayake’s critical contributions successfully challenge Eurocentric hegemony within film analysis. For decades, Western-trained scholars evaluated Asian visual culture through universalizing lenses like Hollywood continuity editing or psychoanalysis. Dissanayake disrupts this by activating classical Eastern poetics, utilizing the Sanskrit concepts of Rasa (aesthetic flavor) and Dhvani (suggestion) to decode the works of Satyajit Ray and Lester James Peries (Dissanayake 2003).

Furthermore, in his analysis of popular Hindi cinema—ranging from Raj Kapoor’s melodramas to blockbusters like Sholay—he demonstrates how these narratives inherit their narrative architecture from the epic traditions of the Mahabharata and Ramayana (Gokulsing and Dissanayake 2004). For an anthropologist, this textual decoding offers insight into how popular mythic structures are repurposed to help communities collectively process the psychological shocks of rapid, capitalistic modernization.

The Limits of Textual Essentialism and Elite Frameworks

Despite these insights, a rigorous anthropological critique highlights the core limitation of Dissanayake’s approach: the trap of textual essentialism. Rooted primarily in literary and film studies, his methodology relies almost exclusively on high classical texts, elite canonical histories, and formal aesthetics. From an ethnographic standpoint, this high-literary bias risks flattening the internal fissures, power hierarchies, and actual lived experiences of South Asian communities.

As cultural anthropologists of the region have long observed, prioritizing Brahmanical or highly Sanskritized textual models to explain modern creative practices inevitably replicates the ideological biases of elite, literate classes (Dirks 2001). By filtering visual culture exclusively through classical epics or Rasa theory, Dissanayake’s framework inadvertently glosses over the complex socio-political fractures of caste and gender that dictate how communities actually experience social space.

For example, this text-centric methodology fails to account for the lived experiences of marginalized groups, such as lower-caste and subaltern communities, who have historically been excluded from—and oppressed by—the very “enabling traditions” he celebrates. When contemporary subaltern and Dalit cultural producers deploy cinema as an expressive medium, their ethnographic intent is often not to find aesthetic harmony within classical structures, but to actively dismantle them as architectures of historical trauma and structural discrimination (Ingle 2019; Yengde 2022). Ultimately, without a grounded, field-based methodology, a purely text-based framework risks isolating the artwork from the deep, empirical friction of local, lived realities.

Industrial Constraints and the Post-Colonial Paradox

Furthermore, materialist and political-economic critiques reveal that Dissanayake’s focus on text and cognitive coping mechanisms causes him to undertheorize the concrete realities of cultural production. While he reads family melodrama as an abstract allegory for resisting Westernization, he downplays the industrial and institutional constraints governing visual culture. A community’s artistic output is never entirely autonomous; it is aggressively restricted by corporate financing, state censorship, and market distribution networks. By prioritizing what the cinematic text signifies, his framework isolates the cultural product from the material conditions of its manufacturing (Banaji 2006).

Finally, a major paradox exists within his method of “Disruptive Inquiry.” While Dissanayake fiercely critiques Western models for their Eurocentrism, his own analytical toolkit remains deeply dependent on Western critical theorists like Walter Benjamin and the Frankfurt School to validate his Eastern frameworks. For an anthropologist attuned to unmediated vernacular voices, this raises a poignant question: does this approach achieve genuine local intellectual autonomy, or does it merely repackage Eastern heritage into a specialized idiom tailored for Western academic consumption (Guneratne and Dissanayake 2003; Silva 2016)?

Conclusion: Grounding Heritage in the Vernacular

In conclusion, Wimal Dissanayake’s Enabling Traditions remains a foundational contribution to post-colonial cultural studies. He successfully rescued heritage from colonial obsolescence, proving that cinema is a vital site of self-determination. Yet, because his framework lacks an ethnographic foundation, it must be balanced by the core strengths of cultural anthropology. To fully realize the intellectual autonomy he championed, contemporary scholars must move beyond elite textual classicism and ground his theories within the messy, fractured, and material realities of everyday folk life.

References cited

Banaji, Shakuntala. Reading ‘Bollywood’: The Young Audience and Hindi Films.
