This abundantly bountiful environment, alas, is but a veneer now. Sri Lankans are unique in that we are able to measure beauty and splendour of the environment from our own experience of our land, rather than from alien lands.

Today’s Sri Lankan is a shadow his former self, struggling with weakened resilience against a consumerist-market dominated advertising blitz on television, while transnational corporations and international financial agencies throttle and imperil indigenous choices despite the only genuine alternative having been in power for around two years.

Over past decades, the powerful had become contemptuous of the law, with no compassion for the poor and the weak by the rich and strong, who had become so at the expense of the poor. Greed was the driving force of all economic and social endeavour. Collectivism is still a forgotten ethical standard. The ugly head of globalization is still quite visible behind every popular media.

Sinhala teledrama dialogue is interspersed with expressions such as “Wow!” to exclaim surprise, while “shit” is unashamedly expressed to show disappointment, actors probably unaware of their meaning, having picked up such references from western programs aired locally. Audio-visual media anchors and presenters, young actors and actresses, are all fair-skinned, and do not in the least represent the average complexion of our people.

The superiority placed on fair-skin was used by Caucasians in their colonies, while “foreign tourists” quickly cotton-on to the new status quo upon arrival. Local women are told by the all-embracing advertising industry that their skin needs to be ‘fair and lovely’ to be acceptable, a vain pursuit of the highest order. Not to be outdone, ageing men with wrinkled skin sport jet-black hair, a truly incongruent mix.

Failed remnant politicians endlessly sprout hackneyed phrases about “development” while prices of everyday consumables like vegetable and powdered milk sky-rocket, possibly due to strictures imposed by parasitic lenders such as the IMF. We see ‘carpeted’ main roads and ‘big’ structures in former rulers’ home towns, with absolutely no relevance to mainstream society.

This blind pursuit of ‘progress’ as seen in the West is not a true option for development, but a beguiling path to eventual destruction. None of these traits are either sustainable or stable, as repeatedly stated by the people’s party activists when corrupt opportunists ruled.

A simple but poignant example is the proliferation of mobile phones among all and sundry. Young men and women now attempt to ensure each-others’ fidelity by examining the other’s SIM card for secret alliances, where basic trust is often non-existent. Some maintain a secret second SIM for infidelity facilitation. I cannot imagine similar intrusions of yester-year when letters used to be exchanged between young lovers.

Internet pornography-induced child-sex crimes, including by “protected” religious clerics, drug abuse, social debasement and a wholly materialistic outlook on life had been hallmarks of profoundly troubled Western societies, not of dear mother Lanka. Women who are sold to Middle-Eastern slavery as housemaids are routinely given a contraceptive injection before departure. Attractive women in factories are routinely kept by owners and managers as mistresses, with no choice for the woman but to submit, often with the knowledge of their boy-friend or aspiring husband-to-be.

It seems as if these trivialized people still cannot express defiance of an unjust system which condemned them to the peripheries of existence. Many are the victims of megalomaniac rulers and their ill-intentioned economic plans and value-systems imposed on a once-proud nation. The jobless, voiceless, faceless, rootless and futureless, emaciated, ill-nourished, indebted, frustrated and depressed are the invisible reality that “expatriate” Sri Lankans often do not care to identify on their “trips” back home.

“Foreigners”, (a term commonly used for white-skinned visitors) are often seen using three-wheeled transport, and even public transport, buying food from eateries and “super” markets. Indians and Chinese are not considered in the same category, regardless of their spending habits. National income, in the form of foreign exchange in “hard” currencies is very unevenly distributed, a vestige from the former corrupt system.

What has been deliberately destroyed in the preceding generations in the pursuit of individual glory is stupendous. What is being burdened on future generations is unfathomable, not only in terms of foreign debt, but degradation in values, morals, ethics and norms.

The state can be manipulated to use its powers only by a people aware of what they receive and how best it may be changed. People have a responsibility to nurture this resplendent isle to its former glory by rediscovering their humanity, fellowship with the enduring heritage of its blessed soil and compassionate endeavour.

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

3,8

post-248467","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-editorial

Reflections From A Pilgrimage Of Love &
