Whether it is true is yet to be seen and if so, who would be the beneficiaries of such a resurrection. It is essential at the outset to find out why Tamil youths took to weapons in the first instance and as to whether similar conditions prevail at present. Years of racial discrimination starting in economic neglect of Tamil areas followed by employment in public service related to recruitment and promotion and finally the denial of admission to university which was the last straw. This coupled with repeated state sponsored violence unleashed on Tamils to break their economic prosperity, where none of the perpetrators were brought to justice and no victims were compensated, drove into the minds of the youths that there is no foreseeable future for them in the country and the only solution is either to emigrate to greener pastures or to have a state ruled by them where they could live in dignity and safety free from Sinhala hegemony. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Recently there was a press conference by a Sinhala hardliner probably with links to an opposition group, about a factory in Killinochchi run by former LTTE cadres where bombs were being produced. This was obviously to rouse up the Sinhalese, to distract their focus about ongoing arrests of corrupt individuals and concentrate on anti-Tamil bashing. Fortunately, government took prompt action to investigate into it and when found that it was false, took into custody the culprit who was behind this canard. There is likely to be such attempts in the future too, about which government has to be vigilant. Next are the Tamil pseudo-nationalists who are using LTTE name to further their political future and fill their pockets. These are tireless self-promoters who have secret dealing with Sinhala political parties and thus brunt of the law over agitations will be felt only by ordinary Tamils. Their defeat at recent elections demonstrates that Tamils are not willing to be hoodwinked anymore and if government addresses fair demands of Tamils, these politicians will become extinct. However if government fails to resolve issues faced by Tamils, anything is possible about regrouping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Name of Tamil diaspora is being touted by vested interests in scuttling progress being made by the government, despite majority of Tamils abroad being not interested in furtherance of separatist ideology. Tamil organisations which are in forefront among them have lost credibility in the minds of the people as dubious ones existing on their subscriptions. Himalayan proclamation is one good example of their duplicity, where their militant stand in the past succumbed to obtaining privileges from the government. Next there are individuals who are propagating false stories about existence of prominent members of LTTE and possible resurgence, in order for people to contribute to their project. These are nothing but swindlers and as Tamils were vary to part with their money,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>that attempt ended prematurely, but they are unlikely to rest. Then there are foreign agencies who are operating in Srilanka who may use disgruntled Tamil population to further their interest to get Srilanka within their orbit of influence. They could use LTTE bogey without actually organising it to operate, and after the last debacle of being let down by them, it would be a herculean task.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is now more than 17 years since the war ended, but the grievances of Tamils which prompted them to take onto weapons, have not been attended to. In addition, still there are lands occupied by armed services not released to the owners, and hardly any progress about the fate of the missing persons. Present government like the previous ones, is not making any effort to fulfil constitutional provisions regarding devolution of power. At present the Tamils in Srilanka are war weary and not in a mood to start armed confrontation, but this situation may change and to go into a state of complacency expecting it will never happen is foolish. There was a conference organised by Hong Kong university attended by TGTE on the feasibility of establishing the state of Ealam. This could not have happened without the involvement of Chinese government, which may be trying to use Tamils in Srilanka to destabilise Tamil Nadu in particular and India in general.
