With over\u00a0600 lives lost<\/b>, 2.2 million people affected, and\u00a0US$4.1 billion in structural damage<\/b>, the nation faced an unprecedented humanitarian emergency. In our darkest hour, the global community stepped forward, but it was\u00a0India<\/b>\u00a0that unmistakably reaffirmed its status as Sri Lanka\u2019s closest, fastest, and most dependable ally.<\/p>\n

The Ultimate First Responder: Operation Sagar Bandhu<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

While long-term aid frameworks take weeks to organize, India acted within hours. Under\u00a0Operation Sagar Bandhu<\/b>, the Indian military launched a massive, multi-dimensional search, rescue, and relief mission.<\/p>\n

Indian naval vessels already nearby\u2014including the aircraft carrier\u00a0INS Vikrant<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0INS Udaigiri<\/b>\u2014immediately diverted to Colombo to hand over emergency rations. Yet, none could match India’s immediate deployment of boots on the ground\u2014which included\u00a080 specialized Urban Search and Rescue personnel<\/b>, military medical task forces, and heavy transport assets that evacuated hundreds from marooned areas.<\/p>\n

Reconstruction and Economic Cushioning:<\/b>\u00a0While the UN launched a\u00a0US$35.3 million Humanitarian Priorities Plan<\/b>\u00a0to address immediate survival needs, India looked toward our long-term survival.
