Marking 15 years of fearless investigative reporting, the exiled digital platform Colombo Telegraph<\/a><\/em><\/span> (CT) reached its 15th anniversary in September 2026. During this period, the platform did more than just link Colombo with global hubs like London, Paris, Rome, Los Angeles, Toronto, Chicago, Tokyo, and Melbourne. It fundamentally reshaped the modern public square, shifting journalism away from a passive record of elite politics and turning it into a powerful, unyielding arena for whistleblowing and accountability.<\/p>\n

Exposing the Vault: The CT\u2019s WikiLeaks Ethos<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Operating under a shared philosophy of absolute transparency, the Colombo Telegraph<\/em> has long acted as Sri Lanka’s answer to WikiLeaks<\/a><\/em><\/span>. This connection is more than philosophical; CT<\/em> solidified its reputation in 2011 by becoming the primary portal for publishing the explosive US Embassy Cairo and Colombo diplomatic cables regarding Sri Lankan war crimes\u2014material mainstream domestic media was too terrified to touch. Yet, unlike the raw, global data-dumps characteristic of WikiLeaks<\/em>, CT<\/em> anchors its leaks within a localized framework of aggressive investigative reporting. It provides a fearless digital portal for whistleblowers, routinely defying censorship to publish unredacted corporate secrets and classified state intelligence that would otherwise remain buried in the dark.<\/p>\n

In channeling the whistleblowing ethos of WikiLeaks<\/em>, the Colombo Telegraph<\/em> walks the same path as other global vanguard publications forced into exile, including Meduza (covering Russia from Latvia) and El Faro (covering El Salvador from Costa Rica).<\/p>\n

The Radical Public Square: Malaysia\u2019s Malaysiakini and India\u2019s The Wire<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In Malaysia, Malaysiakini<\/em> bypassed draconian print-licensing barriers by pioneering web-based dissent, while in India, The Wire has consistently anchored an alternative digital frontline against aggressive legal and political crackdowns. Operating with a shared adversarial ethos, the Colombo Telegraph<\/em> exists as Sri Lanka’s exact functional parallel within this democratic vanguard. Ultimately, the outlet replaced the status quo of cozy establishment journalism with a fierce, institutional weapon for systemic accountability and public-interest truth.<\/p>\n

The financial and legal resilience forms the structural backbone of the Radical Public Square. To survive state-sanctioned advertising boycotts and political pressure, independent digital media platforms had to completely reinvent how journalism is funded. While the Colombo Telegraph<\/em> relied heavily on a volunteer-driven, exiled infrastructure, its regional peers built innovative, independent economic engines. Malaysia’s Malaysiakini<\/em> successfully bypassed draconian government print-licensing restrictions by pioneering a digital subscription model, forcing a hostile state to realize it could not choke out a web-based readership. Similarly, India\u2019s The Wire<\/em> rejected corporate control by relying entirely on non-profit grants and grassroots reader donations. By securing financial autonomy, all three outlets ensured that their editorial lines could neither be bought nor starved out by the state.<\/p>\n

Crucially, this independence has made them primary targets for relentless legal warfare and state harassment. The Colombo Telegraph<\/em> has famously faced arbitrary domestic blocks and forced geopolitical exile, but its contemporaries face equally severe crackdowns on the ground. Malaysiakini has endured decades of police raids, confiscated servers, and historic, financially crippling contempt-of-court fines designed to force insolvency. Meanwhile, The Wire<\/em> routinely battles a barrage of multi-million-dollar defamation suits and intrusive digital crackdowns in India, aimed at burying their journalists under endless litigation. For these publications, the courtroom is not merely a legal venue, but a weaponized extension of political retaliation\u2014one they continue to withstand in defense of an open public square.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, it is this shared crucible of financial defiance and legal endurance that underscores the profound legacy of the Colombo Telegraph<\/em> as it reaches its fifteen-year milestone. By surviving the exact strains of state-sponsored siege that continue to test Malaysiakini<\/em> and The Wire<\/em>, the CT<\/em> has proven that independent digital journalism in South Asia is not a fragile anomaly, but an extraordinarily resilient institutional force.<\/p>\n

Assessing the CT through the Lens of the US Media Landscape: Similarity and Difference<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Because the US provides strong protection like the First Amendment, no prominent outlet needs to operate as a literal “exile media” to escape physical crackdown. However, US-based digital entities such as The Intercept<\/em>, the elite whistleblower blueprint, offer a compelling functional parallel in how they manage adversarial counternarratives. Launched in the wake of the Edward Snowden disclosures, The Intercept institutionalized secure, anonymous digital drop boxes to protect sources exposing mass surveillance and state overreach. This is where the structural similarity converges with a profound geographic difference: while The Intercept<\/em> utilizes constitutional protections to challenge Washington from within its borders, the Colombo Telegraph<\/em> has had to build an identical ecosystem of radical, leak-driven accountability from a position of forced geopolitical exile. Both platforms prove that in the digital age, a modern free press is defined less by its physical newsroom and more by its willingness to safeguard the anonymous whistleblowers who pull back the curtain on state or corporate power.<\/p>\n

However, The Intercept<\/em> features highly rigorous institutional editing, heavy legal backing, and strict factchecking; in these aspects, it contrasts with the Telegraph<\/em>\u2019s uneven column quality. The CT<\/em>\u2019s op-ed ecosystem closely matches the editorial ethos of US-based digital platforms like Truthout<\/em> and CounterPunch<\/em> rather than that of The Intercept<\/em>. Just like the Colombo Telegraph<\/em>, these center-left, anti-establishment outlets prioritize providing an uncensored democratic forum over adhering to rigid corporate or elite formatting.<\/p>\n

While CT<\/em>\u2019s document leaks are often highly impactful, its open-door editorial policy presents a distinct editorial compromise. Because it functions as a broad, non-curated public forum, brilliant legal, economic, politico-social, and cultural analyses sometimes sit side-by-side with deep partisan rants and diatribes. This internal friction is perhaps the central paradox of the Colombo<\/em> Telegraph\u2014a<\/em> tension inherent to all digital outlets that adhere strictly to an open public square model. Therein lie the dual editorial challenges: shedding the compromised corporate constraints of self-censored mainstream media, while simultaneously filtering out the petty, unstructured monologues that masquerade as public debate.<\/p>\n

The Editorial Challenges of Exiled Platforms\u2028Managing the editorial desk of an exiled digital platform is an exhausting, almost impossible task unless helmed by individuals of extraordinary resilience and dedication. The sheer weight of navigating state hostility while maintaining editorial integrity is immense. Consider the global blueprint: when the 2013 Snowden leaks shook the world, traditional outlets like The Guardian<\/em> faced severe political pressure from state actors. In response to these institutional limits, Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras launched The Intercept in 2014. It was built to serve a singular, radical editorial purpose\u2014acting as a secure, unyielding archive for publishing and contextualizing classified intelligence.<\/p>\n

Since 2011, the CT<\/em> and its fiercely determined editor, Uvindu Kurukulasuriya<\/a><\/span>, have been fundamentally intertwined. Their shared history is forged in state friction. Facing severe repression across much of its fifteen-year existence, the platform survived because its editor single-handedly confronted systemic censorship. In the truest sense, the Colombo Telegraph<\/em> is that exile\u2019s ink.<\/p>\n

A Personal Note on Uvindu<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In closing this tribute to the Colombo Telegraph<\/em>\u2019s remarkable fifteen-year journey, I wish to add a brief personal note. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a close friend of mine balanced his studies at the University of Kelaniya with his work at Sri Lanka’s English weekly, the Sunday Observer<\/em>. Following his graduation during the island’s turbulent years of the 1980s, he relocated to the Middle East to join Gulf News<\/em>\u2014a major media artery in the Persian Gulf region\u2014before eventually settling in Toronto, Canada.<\/p>\n

It was during these Toronto years that his creative output truly flourished. Within a remarkably brief span, he produced several booklets, penned a Sinhala novel despite his established background as an English writer, translated multiple acclaimed Sinhala works into English, and contributed frequently to both his own platform and the CT<\/em>. Tragically, his journey was cut short when he passed away from cancer in 2023. Even in his final days, he was passionately translating an acclaimed Sinhala novel\u2014a final creative project left uncompleted.<\/p>\n

Upon learning of his passing, I drafted an appreciative tribute to his creative legacy and forwarded it to the Colombo Telegraph<\/em> with a request to publish it before the funeral. The CT<\/em> generously published it within a few short hours. Living in the Midwestern United States, I attended the Toronto funeral mass remotely via the web stream. Watching Uvindu Kurukulasuriya log in to the service all the way from his exiled post in London was a profound moment\u2014one that vividly underscored the unmatched, deeply personal dedication to the community and the mission he first undertook in 2011 as Chief Editor of the CT<\/em>.<\/p>\n
