Growing up with two brothers, Mubeena Barry kept mostly to herself, finding it rather challenging to express her inner world vocally. As a child, she recalls having a close friend break her trust, making her even more wary of opening up to anyone. Needing somewhere to pour her thoughts, she eventually turned to the blank page. Writing became her refuge, holding all the feelings she could not bring herself to say out loud. Today, she is the author of her debut poetry book, A Book That You Will Never Read<\/i>, published by The Jam Fruit Tree Publications.<\/p>\n

As Mubeena grew up, her relationship with both her writing and the world around her changed. Over time, Mubeena found herself leaning into her faith, a shift that completely reshaped how she saw other people. Turning to God taught her the grace of forgiveness and freed her from chasing approval from everyone she met. She started looking at others with more empathy, realising that almost everyone is carrying unseen burdens.\"\"<\/p>\n

For years, her mother was her main anchor, constantly reminding her to choose kindness. While Mubeena admits that she is still an introvert who chooses her people carefully, she has learned to meet others where they are. She remembers years spent around people who only stuck around when things were going well, offering friendship only when it was convenient. Everything shifted recently when she found a small circle of genuine friends who accepted her as she was.<\/p>\n

“These friends brought out the best in me, and I am so grateful for that,” Mubeena says. “They became my people. Most of the time, people want to be around when you are doing well, but these friends were there even when I was at my lowest. If things had gone any differently, I do not think I would have found them, nor would I have found myself or my faith.”<\/p>\n

The spark for her book came during her Advanced Level studies in English literature. Her teacher happened to mention that while many writers put out poetry collections, very few attempt to write a continuous story in verse. Wanting to push her own limits and challenge her teacher as well, Mubeena decided to try it out. However, shaping a single narrative through poetry initially felt exhausting. By the time she reached the fourth chapter, she hit a wall and set the project aside.<\/p>\n

The draft for her book sat untouched until her university years, when a lecturer gave Mubeena an assignment she was struggling to finish. Sensing her frustration, the lecturer noted that she seemed creatively stuck and urged her to figure out what was blocking her. That conversation reignited her drive. Mubeena picked up her pen again, found her flow, and finished the book over two and a half years. When her lecturer read the final manuscript, she urged Mubeena to publish it.<\/p>\n

According to Mubeena, her creative routine usually unfolds during the night. The poet admits her best ideas rarely surface during the rush of the day, arriving instead in the hazy space right before sleep.<\/p>\n

As a psychology undergraduate, Mubeena learned the reason behind this as well. “Inspiration usually hits when I am half asleep,” she explains. “I always keep a piece of paper with me. During the day, our brain is too busy worrying about what everyone else thinks. But as we drift off, our subconscious takes over and your thoughts come unfiltered. Sometimes I stay up writing until four thirty in the morning just letting ideas flow. When I wake up, I am often surprised by what is on the page.”<\/p>\n

Publishing was never part of her initial plan. Writing had always been a personal outlet for Mubeen and she occasionally posted under pseudonyms. It was her brother who convinced her to step out from behind the screen under her real name. Being outgoing and lively himself, Mubeena\u2019s brother saw her potential and wanted her to build her own identity as a writer. His encouragement gave her the confidence to put her work out into the world.<\/p>\n

“The title of my book is,\u00a0 <\/span>A Book That You Will Never Read. <\/i>This is simply because I wanted to see who would actually reach for the book despite the title. I know that those are my kind of people,” she says. “If I ever saw a book with a title like that, I would definitely pick it up.”<\/p>\n

Beyond exploring her own feelings, Mubeena uses her writing to capture subtle human emotions and daily life. To gather inspiration, she spent hours watching people in places like cafes, noticing how rarely anyone is present in the moment. She also feels strongly that our current society piles unwritten rules and unnecessary pressure on people, forcing everyone into strict timelines and stereotypes.<\/p>\n

“People are so used to following the crowd that they have forgotten who they are,” she says. “They are terrified of being alone and enjoying quiet isolation. But some of my best moments have happened when I was entirely on my own. Observing and noticing the world by myself is exactly what made me a writer as well.”<\/p>\n

When it was time to publish her book, Mubeena felt comfortable with The Jam Fruit Tree Publications. Having worried about people misinterpreting or judging her work harshly, she found her publisher’s clear and direct approach reassuring. She recalls how the process went smoothly that she almost forgot about the manuscript during her university exams, only realising it was almost done when the publisher called to give her an update. Later, she recalls visiting the publishing house and holding the finished physical copy for the first time in her hands as a surreal experience.<\/p>\n

Mubeena\u2019s mother remains a guiding force in her life. Even though her mother was a teacher, she never pressured Mubeena to chase academic trophies. Instead her mother encouraged her to focus on character, kindness, and staying true to herself. Through her poetic story, Mubeena touches on love, grief, regret, and loss, urging readers to express how they feel before time runs out.<\/p>\n

“Life is short, and we never know when someone might leave us,” she reflects. “Show as much love and kindness as you can. But those words mean a lot more if your actions back them up. Be there for people in small ways that ease their burden.”<\/p>\n

Mubeena hopes that her book would urge readers to look beyond the surface and appreciate the simple yet profound ways people care for one another. “We are all dealing with our own struggles, and even if we don\u2019t tell them out loud, we experience them deeply,” she says. “I believe in being authentic. You do not have to fit into every room you enter. It\u2019s much better to focus on attracting your own people, because in genuine relationships you will never have to pretend. Find the ones who can hold you exactly as you are, because that will always be worth the wait.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
