{"id":35211,"date":"2012-03-22T00:04:24","date_gmt":"2012-03-22T00:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=35211"},"modified":"2012-03-22T00:05:19","modified_gmt":"2012-03-22T00:05:19","slug":"unhrc-war-crimes-push-angers-sri-lankans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/unhrc-war-crimes-push-angers-sri-lankans\/","title":{"rendered":"UNHRC War Crimes Push Angers Sri Lankans- THE AUSTRALIAN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Amanda Hodge &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/unhrc-war-crimes-push-angers-sri-lankans\/the_australian_logo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-35212\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-35212\" title=\"The_Australian_logo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/The_Australian_logo.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"176\" height=\"50\" \/><\/a>SRI Lanka has warned a vote this week on a UN Human Rights Council resolution that could lead to a fresh probe into alleged war crimes committed during the 26-year civil conflict will derail the delicate peace process there.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 47-member council is due to vote tomorrow on the US-sponsored resolution, which calls for the Sinhalese majority government &#8220;to address serious allegations of violations of international law by initiating credible and independent investigations and prosecutions of those responsible for such violations&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It also calls for Sri Lanka to act on recommendations made by its Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission, such as demilitarising the former Tamil Tiger-held north and east and publishing the names of detainees.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35216\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/unhrc-war-crimes-push-angers-sri-lankans\/lanka-articlelarge-ishara\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-35216\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35216\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35216\" title=\"LANKA-articleLarge Ishara\" src=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/LANKA-articleLarge-Ishara.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/LANKA-articleLarge-Ishara.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/LANKA-articleLarge-Ishara-300x165.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-35216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Buddhist monks protested in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Monday. A Sri Lankan official called a United Nations initiative \u201cstrikingly divisive and polarizing.\u201d\/Ishara S.Kodikara\/Agence France-Presse \u2014 Getty Images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>US officials have been lobbying hard for the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>But Rajiva Wijesinha, adviser to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on reconciliation, described the aggressive lobbying as &#8220;startling&#8221; given &#8220;human rights and the welfare of civilians in conflict is something they&#8217;re not at all concerned with&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The comment was an oblique reference to the killing of 16 Afghan civilians earlier this month by a US soldier in Kandahar.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Lankan officials in Geneva have been pushing equally hard to defeat the resolution. Those efforts were dealt a blow on Monday when Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh indicated his government was &#8220;inclined to vote in favour of the resolution if (it) will cover our objectives, namely the achievement of a future for the Tamil community in Sri Lanka that is based on equality, dignity, justice and self-respect&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>India&#8217;s Congress Party-led alliance is under intense pressure from its southern Indian Tamil coalition partner, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party, to support the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Wijesinha told The Australian from Geneva he did not believe that Mr Singh&#8217;s statement supporting those objectives necessarily represented support for the US push, &#8220;because we firmly believe that this resolution will not help to achieve that&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Lankan officials say much has been achieved since the May 2009 end of the war, with new roads and schools built in the Tamil-dominated north and east. The LLRC largely cleared the army of serious war crimes and human rights abuses, but found individual cases of human rights abuses by Sri Lankan troops.<\/p>\n<p>A report commissioned by UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, however, found &#8220;credible&#8221; allegations of rights violations by the army and Tamil Tigers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":35212,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2201],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-35211","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-from-foreign-media"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 -
