NEW DELHI: India on Friday lodged a diplomatic complaint with the United States after Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said he was detained by US airport immigration officials for 90 minutes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Khan, 46, who was travelling in a private plane to deliver a speech at Yale University on Thursday evening, said he was held by officials at New York\u2019s White Plains airport.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes it always happens, it\u2019s nice. Whenever I start feeling arrogant about myself, I always take a trip to America,\u201d he joked with students at the Yale event.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe immigration guys kick the stars out of stardom,\u201d said Khan, who boasted of some small victories when he was questioned under detention, such as fibbing about his height.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe next time I\u2019m gonna be more adventurous. What colour are you? I\u2019m gonna say white,\u201d Khan said.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the first time Khan has complained of being targeted in the United States.<\/p>\n

In 2009, the Indian cinema legend was detained for two hours at Newark airport in New York, suggesting then that he was singled out as a Muslim. He was released after the intervention of the US embassy.<\/p>\n

That incident came shortly after Fox Star Studios struck a deal to finance and distribute the film \u201cMy Name is Khan\u201d, starring Khan as an Indian Muslim setting out on a journey across the United States.<\/p>\n

The film featured the contentious subject of racial profiling after the September 11, 2001 attacks.<\/p>\n

Reacting to the latest incident, India\u2019s Foreign Minister S M Krishna said he had asked India\u2019s ambassador to Washington to take up the issue with the US authorities.<\/p>\n

A foreign ministry official in New Delhi said the \u201crepeated\u201d targeting of Khan had to be more than coincidental.<\/p>\n

\u201cA mechanical apology is not adequate,\u201d said the official, who declined to be named.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
