Dear\u00a0friends,<\/p>\n

This year, Queen Elizabeth\u00a0II\u00a0will celebrate her diamond\u00a0jubilee, to mark sixty years as monarch and\u00a0head of the commonwealth. The celebrations will be long, grand, and varied, and one of the flagship events will be a private luncheon in London on the 6th of June with the Prime Minister, the Foreign Secretary … and a war criminal.<\/p>\n

The President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, a man against whom the UN have found credible allegations of responsibility for the murder of 40,000\u00a0civilians, and who leads a government that oversaw the\u00a0disappearance\u00a0of 32 people this March alone, will join the Queen and other heads of state at the taxpayer-funded meal.<\/p>\n

This is no way to celebrate a\u00a0jubilee.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Government of Sri Lanka were rightly\u00a0taken to task\u00a0by the UN Human Rights Council, both for their\u00a0failure\u00a0to address\u00a0accountability for\u00a0past\u00a0crimes,\u00a0and their continued use of torture and\u00a0oppression. They responded in typically\u00a0belligerent\u00a0fashion\u00a0by redoubling\u00a0their\u00a0attacks on independent journalists and human rights defenders. It is therefore absolutely vital that at this key moment the international community keep the pressure on. This is not the moment\u00a0to\u00a0treat\u00a0the President of Sri Lanka to pomp and\u00a0pageantry\u00a0— nor should the Queen be forced to spend her jubilee\u00a0posing for photos with a man who should be indicted\u00a0for mass murder.<\/p>\n

You can help m<\/strong>ake sure this doesn’t happen<\/strong><\/p>\n

The British Royal Family has recently introduced ways for you to give them your opinions. We can and should use these channels to tell them that the Queen should be celebrating her\u00a0jubilee\u00a0in the company of war criminals.<\/p>\n

This is the form that the Royal Household has\u00a0set up to send a message to the Queen<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>—\u00a0<\/strong>please use it to register your disgust at President Mahinda’s presence. A sample message is provided at the end of this email.<\/p>\n

The Royal household\u00a0is\u00a0very sensitive to negative publicity around the\u00a0jubilee. There is a good chance that this will be\u00a0successful but, even if he does come, it is important that we register our strong objection. At least President Mahinda will not be able to portray his visit as a public relations triumph.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0jubilee\u00a0should not be about torture and mass murder.\u00a0Please send the Queen that message today.<\/a><\/p>\n

Congratulations on the sixtieth anniversary of your\u00a0accession and sixty years as\u00a0head\u00a0of the Commonwealth.\u00a0But please let me say I am sorry to learn\u00a0that the President of Sri Lanka, Mr Mahinda Rajapaksa, has been invited\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0anniversary\u00a0luncheon\u00a0on the 6th of June. Out of respect for the many victims of this man’s brutality I would ask you to think again.<\/em><\/p>\n

President Rajapaksa led the 2009 campaign against the Tamil Tigers in which around 40,000 innocent civilians were killed. A UN panel found there were credible allegations that\u00a0he\u00a0was\u00a0responsible for war crimes. He has presided over a\u00a0government that has overseen the murder of 35 journalists with no effective investigation. This March alone his security forces did nothing to prevent, and in many cases were complicit in, 32\u00a0disappearances. UN investigations show\u00a0that\u00a0torture is endemic throughout Sri Lanka.<\/em><\/p>\n

Sri Lanka is still trying to heal. The President of Sri Lanka is hindering this process and the international community is finally and rightly starting to take him to task over this. But all that work risks being undone if he is f\u00eated at events such as yours. Please reconsider.<\/em><\/p>\n
