Senior minister DEW Gunasekara’s partner \u00a0Barbara Seneviratne<\/a><\/span> has started to criticise the government through The Island<\/em> letters to the editor columns. In her recent letter<\/a><\/span> she says ; “It is very obvious that SLFP politicians\u00a0are suffering from obsolescence. The obsession to be in power is so great that the government is blind to the fact that our population is sodden with drink, drugs, steeped in vice, eaten up by social and physical malady.” “It\u2019s time the government stopped blowing its own trumpet and took immediate steps\u00a0 to solve the burning issues of the day as regards education, health, food and the rights of the Tamil people etc.” she further says.<\/p>\n

In an\u00a0earlier letter<\/a><\/span> she said ”\u00a0Never in the history of this country have we witnessed as we do today the banality of evil which has penetrated this Island. The recurrent looting of banks, corporations, government institutions, thuggery by government MPs, ministers, and underworld elements is very common, like the sun going down.\u00a0Besides, this\u00a0government has made the legal system easy\u00a0for criminals, but difficult for law abiding citizens.”<\/p>\n

Her partner senior minister DEW Gunasekara is also the chairman of the\u00a0Committee on Public Enterprises ( COPE) . She wrote; “The COPE findings have shown the general public the extent of corruption of this government during the past\u00a0four or five years. So much so, the government\u00a0members of parliament were unable to face the debate on the COPE findings; like racoons, they crept away.\u00a0There are many reasons for this sordid state of affairs. First,\u00a0we have scant respect for public property. The general attitude is to rob anything that is \u2018public\u2019. We have read of VIPs encroaching on public property, etc.\u00a0Secondly, the alarming rise in crime which is due mostly to the lowering of standards in public and private life.”<\/p>\n

“Politics is tainted with crime, the moral standards of policemen, politicians and criminals are indistinguishable.\u00a0For all these crimes, the blame falls on both the people and the government. The governing party\u00a0will nominate any Tom, Dick or Harry, be he a thug\u00a0of the area or a criminal. An\u00a0example is Mervyn Silva.\u00a0The public\u00a0knowingly or otherwise elect shady characters, who are\u00a0poorly educated,\u00a0 drug peddlers and corrupt individuals.\u00a0It is very unfortunate that in 2005, the people\u00a0who had great hopes are now faced with a government steeped in corruption, inefficient administration and greed for power which will make this country hell to live in.” she further wrote.<\/p>\n

SL headed for a dark era?<\/a><\/span><\/h1>\n

\nIt is very commendable\u00a0and refreshing to read\u00a0The Island\u00a0<\/em>editorials. The\u00a0explanatory remarks should be an eye opener to the politicians of the government party.<\/p>\n

It is very obvious that SLFP politicians\u00a0are suffering from obsolescence. The obsession to be in power is so great that the government is blind to the fact that our population is sodden with drink, drugs, steeped in vice, eaten up by social and physical malady.<\/p>\n

These years are the darkest as during the\u00a0time of J. R. Jayewardene, who created\u00a0 this very same mode of government.<\/p>\n

Only one man stood up to him, a brave journalist by the name of B. A. Siriwardena or \u2018Sira\u2019 of\u00a0theAththa<\/em>\u00a0newspaper.<\/p>\n

His\u00a0pen was stronger than the sword or shall I say than the steel chains of his thugs.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s time the government stopped blowing its own trumpet and took immediate steps\u00a0 to solve the burning issues of the day as regards education, health, food and the rights of the Tamil people etc.<\/p>\n
