This morning Bar Association of Sri Lanka<\/a><\/span> has passed two resolutions condemning the intimidation of the Judiciary. The two resolutions include the interference on the Judicial Services Commission<\/a><\/span> and to appoint a panel of lawyers to file action against two sate run media institutions Sri Lanka Broadcasting coperation and Independent Television Network re their recent attacks on judges.<\/p>\n

The official statement of the BASL is to be issued on Monday after the\u00a0getting the signature of all office bearers.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile issuing\u00a0statement\u00a0Lawyers for Democracy<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(LfD) said\u00a0\u201cThe Statement issued by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on 16th<\/sup>September 2012 clearly indicates that there are various attempts to interfere with the affairs of the Judicial Services Commission. After the recent determination made by the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka on a Bill titled \u2018Divinaguma\u2019 political leadership of the government has expressed its dissatisfaction over the decisions made by the Supreme Court.\u201d<\/p>\n

The LfD\u00a0urges the President and the government to respect the independence of the judiciary and take all possible steps to stop direct and indirect intimidation and incitements against the judiciary. LfD also urges the Government to ensure the State media will respect basic decency in journalistic ethics in their references to judiciary and judges. While expressing solidarity with the JSC, we remind the public that in any civilized society all individuals and institutions should respect the judiciary as the ultimate arbiter of all disputes between the State and the citizens.<\/p>\n
